His Love Letter Was Meant For Someone Else Chapter 05

His Love Letter Was Meant For Someone Else Chapter 05

On Monday, Elijah woke up extra early, just like he always did, waiting for me in the alley. He

clutched some bread tight to his chest, and couldn’t help but imagine how surprised I’d be to

see it.

But as minute after minute ticked by, Elijah’s smile slowly dropped. He kept checking his

watch over and over, and by the time we were almost late to school, there was still no sign of

my familiar figure.

“Maybe Elena didn’t know I was waiting for her, and already went to school by herself,” he

thought.

Elijah gritted his teeth, got on his bike, and pedaled as fast as he could to school. When he finally skidded into the classroom, breathless, my desk was completely empty.

He was just about to go look for me when the bell rang for class. He forced down the twisting anxiety in his chest and had no choice but to sit through the entire period.

The second the bell rang for recess, Janet walked over with her test paper, tugging playfully

at the hem of Elijah’s shirt.

“Elijah, I don’t understand so many parts of this. Can you ask Elena to organize another set of

notes for me…”

Before this, it wouldn’t have mattered if it was just one set of notes-if she’d asked for his

life, Elijah would have given it to her without a single complaint.

But right now Elijah couldn’t care less about anything else. He just shoved Janet away and

bolted straight for the teacher’s office.

Watching his anxious back, Janet pouted in exaggerated hurt, but a flash of wickedness

flickered in her eyes.

“Madam, why isn’t Elena here today?”

The teacher knew Elena and Elijah’s families were close, and she was surprised that Elijah didn’t know about Elena’s early admission. “Huh? Elena didn’t tell you? She got early admission to Harvard, she’s not taking the SAT. I’d guess she’s already in Cambridge by

now…”

A loud buzz rang in Elijah’s ears, and his eyes went wide with disbelief.

So when Elena was packing her luggage that day, it wasn’t because her mom was going on a

business trip-she was leaving.

Elijah walked out of the office in a daze. After school, for the first time in months, he didn’t

wait for Janet. He just went home alone.

The second he grabbed his phone, he frantically called me. One ring, two… no matter how many calls he made or how many texts he sent, they all went unanswered.

As the sky turned dark, Elijah looked up out my window. My room was pitch black, dead silent. He finally had to accept the truth. I was gone. And it wasn’t just leaving the city-I’d left

him, too.

Thousands of miles away, I was already on my way to Antarctica.

In my past life, I’d given up my dream to be a housewife for my entire life. But even then, when I had free time, I’d secretly look up information about Antarctica. I could recite every

little fact about it by heart.

That was why I passed the selection process easily, and got the precious spot to volunteer in

Antarctica.

Right before I left, my best friend called me. “Elena, I’m so jealous you don’t have to take the SAT. I’m so sick of doing practice problems every single day!”

I listened to her ramble and laughed, comforting her. Then her voice suddenly perked up, and

she started spilling gossip.

“Do you know? Elijah’s been going crazy looking for you! He used to follow Janet around like a lost puppy, do whatever she told him to. Now he won’t even give her the time of day. If the homeroom teacher hadn’t stopped him, he would’ve flown all the way to Cambridge to find

you!”

If I’d heard this in my past life, I might have been moved. But now, my heart didn’t even flinch.

I just let out a dull “oh.”

Even if Elijah came to Harvard, he wouldn’t find me-only if he chased me all the way to

Antarctica.

Besides, what was this supposed to be? He only appreciated what you had after he lost it?

I scoffed to myself. I didn’t have time to play this stupid “regret and chase” game with Elijah.

It was almost time for my departure, so I said goodbye and hung up.
