A few days later, the money I had left was no longer enough to cover his hospital bills.

The doctor handed me his medication. “His surgery is finished. If you still can’t pay, take these meds and let him recover at home.”

I had just started at my new company, so asking for an advance was impossible. But I could not just let him die, so I had no choice but to take him in.

The shifter’s name was Cole Rivers. Although he was not as breathtaking as Mason, he was beautiful in a completely different way.

After he had stayed with me for a while, he actually asked me to be his girlfriend. I rejected him firmly.

“I have a boyfriend.”

At the dining table, he glanced at the photo on my phone’s lit screen and gave a low laugh. “Is that him?”

I nodded.

“But I’ve never seen him. If this person really exists, how could he possibly tolerate you keeping me in your home, where we spend every day together?”

For a moment, I had no response. “Either way, I’m not going to be your girlfriend.”

“And once you’re fully recovered, find somewhere else to live and move out.”

I did not want to repeat the same mistake.

I did not want to live through everything I had gone through with Mason all over again.

I was about to clear the dishes when Cole grabbed my wrist. His voice was filled with certainty. “Trust me. I’ll make you fall in love with me. I’ll treat you better than he ever did, until you forget him completely.”

For the next month, Cole came to pick me up from work every single day without fail.

My coworkers asked enviously, “Is that your boyfriend? He’s so handsome. You’re so lucky.”

I gave them an awkward smile, grabbed Cole, and walked away without looking back.

Around a corner where my coworkers could not see us, I lost my temper with Cole.

“Do you not understand a word I say? I’ve warned you so many times not to pick me up after work.”

“And stop cooking for me like that. It makes me sick. I don’t need anything from you. I only need you to stay away from me.”

Fine raindrops suddenly began falling from the sky, and soon the drizzle turned into a steady sheet of rain.

Cole took off his jacket and held it over my head.

“That night, I got up to use the bathroom and heard you talking in your sleep after you fell asleep on the couch while working late.”

“You told those bad men to stay away from you, or Mason would kill them.”

“From that moment on, I secretly decided that I would stay by your side and protect you in his place.”

Hearing the name Mason again made my heart tremble.

Just as I was thinking about how to reject the man in front of me, I noticed someone several yards away staring at us without blinking.

I turned my head slightly and saw him.

It was Mason.

His fists tightened a little, as if he were waiting for me to reject Cole.

At that moment, Serena stepped out of a black SUV with an umbrella in hand and walked gracefully to Mason’s side.

She raised an eyebrow at me and smiled smugly.

“I told you she wasn’t a faithful woman. But you insisted on seeing it with your own eyes before you believed me.”

To make sure Mason had no lingering attachment to me, I chose to hook my arm through Cole’s and drag him away.

Before I left, I vaguely heard Mason say behind me in a low voice, “I won’t let you go.”

His voice no longer sounded gentle and obedient like before. It was like a beast crouched in the dark, watching its prey while licking its claws.

I could not help shivering.
