After Ethan left, I thought I would lose sleep because of it. 

But to my surprise, I lay back down and fell asleep as soon as I 

closed my eyes. 

No dreams all night. 

When I woke up the next morning, the space beside me was empty, as expected. 

Ethan hadn’t come back last night. 

I didn’t feel surprised at all. 

After all, he had said “I’ll be back soon” far too many times. 

I got up, washed, and started packing the rest of my luggage. 

Then I called a rideshare and headed straight for the airport. 

The airport was crowded. 

I checked in and walked toward the gate. 

Before boarding, my phone suddenly vibrated. 

I took it out and looked. 

It was a message from Ethan. 

“Ruby fell and sprained her ankle. It wasn’t convenient for her 

to be alone at home.” 

“That’s why I didn’t come back last night.” 

“Sorry, Irene. You’re not mad, are you?” 

When I didn’t reply, he sent another message. 

“What do you want to eat?” 

“I’ll bring it back for you later.” 

I looked at that message. 

A mocking curve pulled at my lips. 

When I was in so much pain I could barely stand, I had never seen him come back to stay with me. 

He wouldn’t even buy me one painkiller. 

When I went to the hospital alone to get my stitches removed. 

When I was falsely accused and hit, handling every mess on 

my own. 

Had he ever asked? 

Had he ever cared? 

All his concern, all his tenderness, all his patience. 

Every bit of it was reserved for Ruby. 

I didn’t reply. 

I silently put away my phone. 

Then I switched it to airplane mode. 

When I returned to my hometown, I saw my parents the 

moment I came out of the airport. 

They were standing at the exit, waving at me. 

As soon as they saw me, they came over immediately. 

“Why did you come back so suddenly?” 

My mom stepped forward and took the small suitcase from my 

hand. 

There was concern in her eyes. 

“Is work not busy?” 

My dad only patted my shoulder. 

He didn’t ask much. 

They didn’t ask why I had suddenly quit my job and come 

home. 

They didn’t ask about my failed relationship. 

They simply used their plainest way to show that they loved 

1. me. 

That night, the dining table was filled with all my favorite 

dishes. 

Eating with my parents and chatting about everyday things felt like going back to childhood. 

Back to those carefree days when I was surrounded by love. 

After dinner, the three of us went out for a walk. 

On the tree–lined path in the neighborhood, the evening breeze brushed past us gently. 

Leaves rustled softly. 

The streetlights stretched our shadows long across the ground. 

I held my mom’s arm. 

I listened to her ramble about the little things that had happened at home lately. 

My dad walked on the other side. 

Every now and then, he added a sentence or two. 

By the time we came back from the walk, I was already a little 

tired. 

Only after we got home did I suddenly remember my phone had been in airplane mode ever since boarding. 

I turned it back on. 

I thought there would be quite a few calls or messages from 

Ethan. 

But on the screen, there was nothing except a few spam texts 

from the carrier. 

No unread messages. 

No missed calls. 

I couldn’t help laughing at myself.
