Ethan froze. 

Then Chloe’s cries came through the phone. 

“No. I don’t want to go. I didn’t do anything.” 

Ethan frowned and was about to ask what had happened when another call came in from the local police department. 

A bad feeling rose in his chest. 

He answered. 

The officer’s voice was serious. 

“Ethan Caldwell, this is the precinct assigned to the Westbridge High area. You are connected to an ongoing 

kidnapping case. Please come to the precinct immediately to 

cooperate with the investigation.” 

Ethan’s brow jumped. 

He instinctively looked at me. 

At the same time, Michael’s phone rang. 

“Mr. Harrington? We’re with the precinct covering 

Westbridge High. The suspects involved in the kidnapping of 

your niece have been arrested. Please bring Avery to identify 

them.” 

Ethan let out a breath. 

He told himself Chloe and I must both have been taken to the precinct because we had been kidnapped together. 

But once that thought settled, something else surfaced. 

“You called the police? You hired people to stage a kidnapping, 

and then you called the police? Are you insane?” 

“Are you trying to use Micheal’s influence to make someone else take the fall?” 

I laughed, but there was no warmth in it. 

“Do you know where I was for the three days I missed school? The hospital.” 

“Do you know why I needed someone to support me when I walked? Because I was beaten until I hemorrhaged. There’s still blood in that alley. You never went to look, did you?” 

“Ethan, I used to think your heart just wasn’t with me anymore. But now I know you’re cruel and stupid.” 

“If it’s someone you don’t care about, their life matters less to you than one tear from Chloe. If it’s someone close to you, she could set the world on fire and you’d still clap for her.” 

“So keep living in your little fantasy where your friends and precious Chloe are always right, and the person who’s wrong is always someone else.” 

Ethan’s face turned deathly pale. 

His body went limp. 

“I didn’t mean it like that. I never thought that. I thought of 

you as mine, so I thought it was okay if you hurt for a little while because I would have plenty of time to make it up to you 

later.” 

“As for the kidnapping, I really didn’t-” 

I took a deep breath. 

“Enough. I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to remember a single detail of how the person I trusted most abandoned me.” 

“There is no future for us. Whatever we had ended the night you handed me that drugged drink.” 

His mouth opened again. 

He was desperate to explain. 

But Michael’s security guard politely stepped between us. 

I got into the car. 

The driver pressed the gas, and the car pulled away. 

In the rearview mirror, Ethan’s figure shrank into a black dot. 

When we arrived at the precinct, Chloe’s crying came from the interrogation room. 

“No, I don’t know anything. I only made a joke. How was I 

supposed to know they would actually do it? It really had 

nothing to do with me.” 

“They’re making it up. Tyler forced me to be his girlfriend, 

and I refused. He hated me for it. Then he found out I got the 

scholarship spot and wanted to drag me down with him.” 

“Officer, my parents aren’t in town. They’ll worry if they can’t 

reach me. Please let me go.” 

Michael and I sat in the waiting area while the questioning 

continued. 

When Chloe started arguing with the disheveled delinquents, 

Ethan happened to arrive. 

He looked at the three suspects in confusion. 

“What is going on? You kidnapped people, and you’re still 

acting this arrogant?” 

He naturally stepped in front of Chloe. 

A bitter feeling rose in my chest. 

But soon, I accepted it. 

This was not the first time he had protected someone who 

hurt me. 

During a relay race at a school meet, Chloe had deliberately tripped me while taking the baton. 

Not only did we lose the race, but my palms and knees were 

scraped bloody. 

When someone helped me up, Chloe apologized with red eyes. 

and said she had not meant to. 

Ethan told her not to apologize. 

He said injuries happened in sports, and maybe her legs had simply gone weak. 

Thinking of that, I gave a bitter smile and slowly calmed down. 

Tyler spat on the floor.
