Hot water splashed across Chloe’s leg. 

The secret joy she had barely managed to hide was interrupted 

by Ethan’s reaction. 

She gasped and shrank back, her eyes turning red. 

“Ethan, what’s wrong?” 

As usual, she deliberately showed him the reddened skin on her leg. 

But Ethan didn’t react with the concern she expected. 

He ignored her and stared at Ms. Carter. 

“You’re saying Avery is studying abroad?” 

His voice shook, though even he did not seem to notice. 

Ms. Carter nodded. “Yes. You two are so close that I thought she would’ve told you already.” 

That offhand remark landed like a blow to Ethan. 

He searched frantically through his memories of their recent 

conversations. 

But all he could remember was the disappointment in Avery’s 

eyes. 

Only then did he realize that since the day he admitted the truth behind her missed qualifier, the words they had exchanged over several days added up to less than what they 

used to say in an hour. 

Seeing him so distracted, Chloe felt a surge of resentment. 

“Ms. Carter, that’s not really fair. Ethan isn’t a mind reader. 

Even if they’re close, she doesn’t have to tell him everything.” 

“And besides, they were close when they were kids. Now everyone has their own friends and their own lives. People can’t stay the same forever.” 

She thought distancing Ethan from Avery would make him feel 

better. 

Instead, she stepped directly on the one thing he could not 

bear. 

In Ethan’s heart, no one could replace what he and Avery had been through together. 

He could be angry with her. 

He could fight with her. 

But he could not accept anyone reducing the promise they had 

made as children to some ordinary friendship. 

He had never planned to separate from Avery. 

And he could not stand hearing anyone define their 

relationship for him. 

Ethan shot to his feet. “If you don’t understand us, don’t talk 

about us. Avery and I have always been close.” 

Chloe froze. 

Her eyes filled with tears. 

Before she could speak, Ethan bolted. “Ms. Carter, I need to 

leave.” 

Chloe buried her face in her arms and started crying. 

Ms. Carter’s reminder to be careful was drowned out by 

Ethan’s hurried footsteps. 

She sighed. 

Ethan ran all the way out of school and took a cab to Avery’s 

apartment. 

When he reached the building, a large moving truck was parked outside. 

Several movers in company vests were carrying out the sofa, the fridge, and other large pieces of furniture. 

Ethan recognized the sofa at once. 

He and Avery had sat on it countless times, watching Netflix and eating snacks. 

The year before, when her period cramps had been so bad she curled up and accidentally stained the cushion, he had washed it by hand and hung it up to dry. 

He rushed forward. “Who told you to move these things?” 

The movers stared at him in surprise. 

Michael and I came out of the building after hearing the 

commotion. 

Michael looked at him coldly. 

“I’m moving my late sister’s things and my niece’s belongings. Do I need to report that to an outsider?” 

Ethan’s face stiffened. 

For the first time, he seemed to realize he no longer had a 

place in my life. 

His eyes reddened with anger. 

“I’m not an outsider. You are. You disappeared for years. You’ve spent less time with her than I have. What gives you the right to call me an outsider?” 

Then he stared at me. 

“Your mom told us before she died that we had to take care of each other. Why didn’t you tell me before making this decision? Just because I hurt you over Chloe, you’re leaving me? I told you-” 

I looked at him without expression. “You don’t need to say anything. I don’t care.” 

My coldness pierced him. 

There had never been this kind of distance between us before. 

His legs went weak. “What do you mean you don’t care? 

You…” 

Before he could finish, his phone rang. 

It was Nolan. 

The moment the call connected, Nolan’s frantic voice 

exploded through the speaker. 

“Ethan, something happened. Chloe was brought in by the police.”
