2 Million? No, Just 200! So I Fled With My Twins Chapter 08

Corin was rushed to the medical center and got seven stitches in his arm. The very next day, he showed up

at the food truck plaza again.

He grabbed a folding chair and sat down behind the truck as if he belonged there. “The healer says my arm

needs at least two weeks, so I can’t do much at the office. Figured I’d come give you a hand.”

I laughed in his face. “Yeah, no. You still owe me for that whole tray of chicken you torched last time. Now you want to come mess things up with a busted arm? Are you trying to put me out of business?”

He didn’t get mad. “I’ll be careful this time.” Then he picked up a chunk of marinated chicken and started

threading it onto a skewer.

He had no idea what he was doing, and his fingers were clumsy. He either shredded the meat or threaded it on crooked, and everything he grilled looked awful.

One customer asked for mild, and he reached for the wrong bottle and squeezed on a thick layer of hot sauce. The customer took one bite, scrambled for water and came straight to me to complain.

I was so annoyed that I rapped the back of his hand with the handle of my tongs and told him to go home and rest already. He didn’t even flinch. He chuckled, then went off to move tables for the customers.

Little by little, everyone at the plaza got to know him. Somebody posted a video online of the richest Alpha in Grayhaven wiping down tables at a food truck.

Commenters ate it up. People said he was finally paying the price for losing his mate, and that his regret had come way too late to count for anything.

At first, the twins avoided him. Whenever he came near, they ducked behind me and peeked out.

Corin didn’t push. He brought a little gift every day, but he never forced it on them. He left it on a free table

nearby and went about his work.

After about two weeks, Isolde was the first to warm up. Corin was crouched on the ground picking up spilled skewers, and she watched him for a long time. Then she held out a clean trash bag and whispered, “Here.”

Corin’s eyes lit up.

A while later, Dorian started hovering while Corin made skewers and bossing him around. “You’re holding the

stick backward. Line the meat up.”

Corin listened like a good student and fixed everything Dorian pointed out. When he finished a skewer, he

held it up and asked if he had gotten it right.

Dorian nodded, and Corin grinned as if he had struck gold.

I saw all of it, and I wasn’t made of stone. But all his hustling now couldn’t erase three years of hell. I held my

ground. I didn’t send him away, but I wasn’t ready to forgive him either.

A little over two months went by like that. Then bad press about the Nightstalker Group started piling up.

The fallout from the launch hadn’t even died down when the company’s main competitors pounced. They

poached several of its biggest longtime clients and got its suppliers to jack up prices and drag out deliveries.

Several of the company’s key projects stalled halfway. Rumors about a cash crunch kept getting louder, and the business news ran a story every day on whether the Nightstalker Group would survive the quarter.

Meanwhile, the verdict in Nyx’s case came down. She was convicted of embezzlement, the attempted

kidnapping of a pup, assault with a deadly weapon and more, and she was sentenced to more than ten years

in prison.

People talked about it for a while, and then it faded.
