2 Million? No, Just 200! So I Fled With My Twins Chapter 02

Corin’s POV

I frowned and glanced at Nyx, then at the kids peeking out from behind Morgana, only half their faces showing. My mood soured.

I felt a faint pull toward those two kids, and my wolf wanted to get closer. But they were too young to have shifted, and they smelled like Morgana, so I couldn’t tell if it was blood or our unbroken mate bond.

One look at Morgana was enough to set my wolf on edge. I still remembered the tearing pain from three years earlier, when she walked away without looking back.

I had to say something cold to drown out the ache in my chest. “Morgana, you’d do anything for money. Who do you think I’m going to believe? Nobody muddies an Alpha’s bloodline. In three days, these kids are getting a paternity test.”

I ground the words out through my teeth. “If they’re mine, I’ll do right by them. But if you’re lying, I’ve got a hundred ways to make sure you’re finished in this town.” Both kids shrank back in fear.

But Morgana agreed on the spot. “Fine. Do your test. And while you’re at it, you’re going to track down where every single dollar went these past three years.”

“And once the truth comes out, you and your precious Beta are going to stand up in front of everyone and beg me and my kids for forgiveness.”

Nyx looked shocked. “Are you out of your mind? He’s the Alpha of Nightstalker Pack. He’s not going to grovel in front of the whole world.”

“Deal,” I said curtly, then turned to leave.

At that moment, Morgana’s daughter leaned in close and brushed her arm against a metal tray fresh off the grill. She let out a shriek.

“Mommy, it hurts!”

I turned back and saw Morgana’s daughter throw herself into Morgana’s arms, sobbing. Isolde was her name, from what I had heard.

Her sweet little face looked a lot like mine, and something in me softened. I almost couldn’t stand to watch. But what came out of my mouth was ice-cold. “Morgana, is this how you take care of your kids?”

Morgana was already running Isolde’s arm under the cold tap by the truck. She paused at my words and looked up. “Two minutes ago, you weren’t even sure they were yours. Now you suddenly care?”

I stared her down as if she were the worst mother alive. “That’s beside the point.”

“You run a food truck. You can’t give these kids a decent life or a real education. For their own safety, I’m taking them with me before they get hurt again.”

The twins burrowed into Morgana’s arms right away and glared at me.

“No way. We’re staying with Mommy.”

“You big meanie! You made Mommy sad. We hate you.”

Morgana wrapped her arms around them. “Don’t be scared. Mommy’s right here. Nobody’s taking you anywhere. Over my dead body.”

Their glares cut right through me, and I couldn’t get a word out.

Nyx stepped in. “Morgana, the Alpha’s only worried about the kids.”

Nyx’s words rescued me from an awkward moment. Maybe Morgana would listen to a fellow she-wolf more than she listened to me. Nyx turned to her.

“It’s packed out here. If anything happened to them, you’d never forgive yourself.”

Nyx had taken the words right out of my mouth. A second later, disaster struck.

Morgana’s POV

Nyx used the chance to edge closer and quietly bumped the pot of sauce sitting on the warmer in front of me. By the time I realized what she was doing, it was too late.

The pot tipped, and scalding barbecue sauce sloshed out, straight at me and the kids. In that split second, I threw my body in front of them on instinct, and the boiling sauce splashed across my left shoulder and arm.
