Zero Affection Behind His Vows Chapter 04

Zero Affection Behind His Vows Chapter 04 He Didn’t Look Back

Wren Frost.” His voice dropped to something awful. “I know you hate Clara. I know you hate her for taking me from you. I was never yours to begin with, but you don’t get to touch her.”

“I’m asking you one more time. Where is Clara?”

The claws went deeper and broke the skin. Blood came at once and ran down my neck into the collar of my fur robe.

The pain tore through me, and my vision kept going dark at the edges.

The two sprites lost it.

“The lion’s gone. He’s completely gone.”

“I’m starting to feel bad for the human. She really doesn’t know.”

“Say something! Lie to him if you have to!”

I got my mouth open, but all that came out of my throat was broken air.

“I… didn’t….

More of it soaked into the white fur at my collar and spread there in a dark stain.

His claws locked on the side of my neck like a vise.

The points were buried in the skin, and every heartbeat dragged a fresh tear through me.

“Last time.” His voice reached me from somewhere far off. “Where is Clara?”

I couldn’t get my mouth open. My vision blurred until all I could make out was the hard line of his jaw and the red flooding his eyes.

The sprites talked over each other.

“She’s not going to make it.”

“Let go of her! She’s actually going to die!”

“The whole pride is right outside. Is nobody coming? Isn’t there anyone else in this lodge?”

“Not talking?” His hand pressed down another fraction.

I heard the skin give under the points, and the blood came faster after that.

Black spots opened up in front of me, like an old television losing its signal.

I was sure that was how I was going to die, and then footsteps came running up outside and somebody shouted.

“My king! We found Clara! She walked into Goldmane Reach on her own!”

Callum’s claws went rigid. Outside, the voice added more.

worked her way out of the ropes and ran. She’s fine, just shaken up.”

The claws came out of my neck all at once, and I went limp on the downgrass mat while the blood kept coming.

Then he turned and walked out into the night, his steps quick and uneven, and the pride went with him.

The wound in my neck throbbed with every beat, and the warm run of it went on down over my collarbone.

The two sprites spun around me in a frenzy.

“He just left?”

“Her neck is still bleeding!”

“He didn’t even look back at her!”

I lay there getting colder while my eyelids dragged down, and the bleeding didn’t stop.

I ran through every method I had ever taught for stopping a bleed, but I couldn’t lift my hands.

“Help…” I forced it out, and it came so thin a breath could have scattered it. “Somebody… help me…”
