The place where he had stopped was remote. It was almost impossible to get a cab.

I waited under the blazing sun for more than an hour.

Maybe I had heatstroke. My head hurt so badly it felt like it would split open, and my hands shook as I called Adrian.

He answered quickly, and a thin thread of hope rose in my heart.

But his voice was the same as always, the voice he used when calming my unreasonable little tantrums.

“Nora, be good. Your husband is busy. Listen to me.”

Before I could speak, he hung up.

I stared at my phone and laughed bitterly.

My husband had rushed to another woman’s side.

I shook the last bit of hope out of my heart and called Jenna.

When Jenna came to pick me up, I was covered in cold sweat. My face looked terrible.

She jumped out of the car in a panic and fed me water.

“Where’s Adrian Whitmore? Is he dead?”

“He left you in this godforsaken place? He’s asking to die.”

I only gripped her hand tightly. I couldn’t speak.

I had just left the hospital, only to be sent back again. The doctor prescribed medicine.

But even then, the man who used to call me nonstop had not sent a single message.
