You Only Loved The Version Of Me That Needed Nothing Chapter 07

The day Arthur landed, I asked Chloe if she wanted to come to the airport with me. 

Chloe was already shaking her head before I finished the 

sentence. “Absolutely not. I’m not third–wheeling your couple reunion.” 

I promised her up and down I wasn’t the type to ditch a friend the second my boyfriend showed up. Turns out, I was exactly that type. 

Traffic crawled. I kept sneaking looks at Arthur in the 

passenger seat. He’d leaned back with his eyes closed – days of no sleep and a red–eye flight catching up with him at last. 

The light through the windshield fell across his face, cutting across his brow. “What are you looking at?” 

His voice was rough, edged with exhaustion. His lashes 

flickered but he didn’t bother opening his eyes. 

Heat climbed up my neck. I snapped my gaze back to the road. “Just admiring those dark circles.” 

“From missing you.” He said it like he was reading something 

off a checklist. 

After all this time, and I still didn’t know what to do when he 

said things like that. My fingers tightened on the steering wheel. Something warm twisted under my ribs. 

A fizzy, restless feeling – the kind where your body didn’t know where to put all that feeling. I had the sudden, stupid 

urge to lean over and bite him. 

What was wrong with me? I swallowed hard. “…Was that a 

line?” 

“Why?” Arthur opened his eyes and tilted his head slightly. 

He looked truly confused. Completely serious. “I’m just telling you the truth.”
