You Kept the Don’s Daughter Waiting and Now She’s Someone Else’s Chapter 06

I looked at Damon’s hand held out to me.

Palm up, long fingers, a silver cufflink gleaming at his sleeve.

Seven years ago, I’d put my hand in his more times than I could count.

When we were children, he held my hand crossing the street.

On rainy days, he held my hand as I trampled through puddles.

Freshman year, when I ran a fever and he carried me home from the nurse’s office on his back. His arms steady enough that I just cried into his shoulder.

Then he went abroad. I saw him off at the airport.

He held out his hand the same way, that lazy smile on his face.

“Nina. Wait for me.”

I didn’t take it back then.

Because Luca was standing behind me.

But now I realized that some hands, you miss once, and God actually gives you a second chance.

I put my hand in his.

Damon closed his fingers around mine at once.

His palm was warm, his grip firm. Like he was afraid I’d change my mind.

Behind me, Luca finally snapped out of it.

“Nina!”

His voice cracked with something he’d never shown before—panic.

The next second, he lunged forward, reaching for me.

But my father was faster.

He stepped between us, blocking Luca cold.

My cousin, my older cousin, my uncle, all of them moved forward at once, closing off Luca’s path.

My great-grandmother stood at the door with her cane, her voice low but clear.

“Nina. Get in the car. Our family’s princess doesn’t miss her hour.”

My mother’s eyes were still red, but she nodded.

“Go.”

I looked at her.

She didn’t want to let me go. I could see it. But she still smiled.

“Don’t worry. Mom and Dad are right here.”

My nose stung. I nodded.

Luca was held back by the relatives, his face livid.

“Dad, Mom, what is this? Today is mine and Nina’s wedding!”

My father’s voice was ice.

“It’s not anymore.”

Luca looked like he hadn’t heard right.

“What do you mean, not anymore? Get out of my way!”

He tried to push forward, but my cousin grabbed his shoulder.

My cousin, who loved cracking jokes on ordinary days, wore a frighteningly cold expression today.

“Luca, weren’t you the one who wasn’t in a hurry a minute ago? What’s the rush now?”

Luca’s eyes went bloodshot.

“She’s my wife! The future Donna of the Russo family! What the hell is that bastard from the Morretti family trying to do!”

Damon heard his name. He turned, still holding my hand, and looked back at Luca, no smile on his lips.

“Mr. Russo. Watch your mouth. No license, no vows, no ceremony yet. She’s not your wife.”

Luca glared at him.

“Damon, what gives you the right?”

Damon let out a quiet laugh.

“The right? I showed up at 12:30. And she chose my car.”

That landed like a slap across Luca’s face. His expression went dark, ugly.

Damon looked down at me.

“Ready?”

I glanced at the time. 12:30. Not a second off.

I squeezed his hand.

“Ready.”

The fireworks were still going off at the gate. Colorful confetti rained down on my wedding dress. I walked the red carpet, step by step, toward Damon’s convoy.

As I climbed into the car, I heard Luca’s voice shredding through the noise.

“Nina!”

“Come back!”

The door shut. The world went quiet.

Damon walked around to the other side and got in.

The car pulled away slowly.

In the rearview mirror, I saw my family holding Luca back at the estate gates. The soldiers on guard duty looked like they were about to draw.

His figure got smaller and smaller.

And then the corner swallowed him whole.
