While Watching Drama, the Heroine Warned Me About My Best Friend Chapter 07

Erving stepped back in fright, his face turning the color of pig liver. “I’m sorry, ma’am. I

misspoke.”

The old woman looked up with a tear-streaked face, sniffling. “What did you say? Speak up-I’m

old and can’t hear well.”

Erving gritted his teeth and raised his voice. “Ma’am! I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have said you were old and couldn’t see clearly!”

The old woman wiped her nose and slowly got up from the floor. Frank hurried to support her.

She turned to Frank and jabbed a finger at his nose. “You’re brainless too! You believe everything people tell you? There’s nothing wrong with our ancestors’ graves-how did you end up with a piece of trash like this?”

Frank hung his head in shame and dared not say another word.

The old woman patted my shoulder. “Come on, dear. You’re done here. I may be old, but my mind is

as clear as a mirror.”

I nodded and followed her out. At the door, I turned back for a glance. Celia glared at me with unyielding hatred.

Outside the hospital, the old woman grabbed my arm in the corridor. “Young lady, I don’t want that two thousand dollars.”

I was taken aback and quickly waved my hands. “That won’t do. You helped me a great deal-you

deserve it.”

The old woman shook her head and lowered her voice. “Thanks to you bringing me here, I found out that woman and your ex-boyfriend are definitely off. The way they look at each other is too intimate-sickeningly close. My poor son is probably still in the dark. I need to stay and keep an eye on things.”

She added, “Give me your number, so we can stay in touch and share updates.”

A warmth spread through my chest. I quickly exchanged contact information with her.

When I walked out of the hospital gate, the sky had gone completely dark. The night wind rushed into my collar, and I shivered.

Thinking back on everything that had happened that day, I broke out in a cold sweat-only belatedly realizing how close I’d come to disaster. If I hadn’t foreseen it, I would probably be dead by now.

Back at my rental apartment, I washed my face and lay down. The female lead’s face from the movie kept replaying in my mind.

“The baby in Celia’s belly is Erving’s.” That sentence stuck in my chest like a thorn.

I sat up. Since they wanted me dead, I wouldn’t go down without a fight.

Early the next morning, I went to the private maternity hospital Celia frequented. I registered and said I was Celia’s friend, here to pick up her health report. The receptionist checked the system and

handed me a stack of papers.

“Ms. Gray just had a D&C yesterday. These are her prenatal records-please keep them safe.”

I took the papers, my fingers trembling slightly. When I flipped to the third page, I stopped. Natural conception. No history of assisted reproduction.

I clutched that page, my heart racing. Just yesterday, Frank had rushed in saying this pregnancy had been hard-won-that it was an IVF baby.

I took a deep breath, folded the report, and tucked it into my bag. That meant the money for IVF had gone into someone else’s pocket.

I sent that key piece of evidence to the old woman.

Three days later, she called and invited me to lunch at her house. Frank’s place was in an old neighborhood in the south of the city. I knocked twice, and the old woman welcomed me in warmly.

Celia whipped her head around, and the words slipped out before she could think: “Why are you

here?”
