The next time I heard news about Enzo was on television.

“Verona police today arrested Serena Ricci on charges of first-degree murder. The deceased is former Mafia family boss Enzo De Luca.”

The compatibility results had come out long ago.

Enzo’s bone marrow was not a match.

He was not the child’s biological father.

But Enzo did not know.

He had always thought the boy was his son.

To pay for the child’s treatment, he worked himself to death.

During the day, he carried cement on construction sites.

At night, he delivered food.

He slept only two or three hours a day.

Serena took advantage of the time he was gone and brought different men home every night.

That dawn, the child called Enzo, crying that he felt sick.

Enzo rushed home.

When he pushed the door open, he found Serena lying in bed with a strange man.

Enzo went mad.

He rushed into the kitchen, grabbed a kitchen knife, and was about to hack at them.

Like a madman, he began hitting Serena again.

As he hit her, he roared.

“Bitch! You lied to me! You were the one who insisted I go to the hot spring, making me miss my daughter’s final moments.”

Serena was nearly strangled by him.

In the dark, her hand found the kitchen knife that had fallen to the floor.

One stab.

Two.

Three.

Enzo collapsed onto the floor, blood bubbling from his mouth.

Serena took the child and ran.

Enzo’s body was discovered only after the neighbor smelled the stench and called the police.

By then, the corpse had decayed beyond recognition.

They had to use DNA to confirm his identity.

He lay in that rented apartment for an entire week.
