While I Was Losing Our Baby, He Was Celebrating Her Dog’s Puppies Chapter 06

“Oh, and he just told me that once the baby is born, he’ll put most of his assets into a trust for the child. You won’t get a cent. As for you, you’re just someone my husband uses to pass the time while I’m pregnant. Honestly, I should probably thank you.”

Blair’s furious breathing came through the phone.

“Don’t get smug! Oh my God, I swear I’ll make Ethan divorce you!”

Half an hour later, she actually sent me a video of herself having sex with Ethan.

A taunting voice message followed.

“Erin, what gives you the right to act so smug? All I had to do was cry, and Ethan agreed to give me a baby. We didn’t use protection at all today. Once I’m pregnant, you and that thing in your stomach can both get out!”

I did not reply.

I had no intention of wasting another second on her.

Two days later, Ethan booked a ballroom at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel to celebrate the second anniversary of Blair’s pet boutique.

The guests included mutual friends, Ethan’s close colleagues, and Blair’s longtime customers.

Before the event even began, Blair excitedly told everyone that I would be apologizing to her during a public livestream.

When the time came, Ethan nodded to a staff member beside the AV console.

The screen lit up.

My face appeared.

“Hello, everyone. At my husband’s request, I’m here today to formally apologize to Ms. Blair Harper.”

Blair looked certain she had won.

Then I smiled into the camera.

“I’m sorry. After you sent me a video of yourself having sex with my husband, I was so disgusted that I threw up. In the middle of all that, I forgot that apparently women who sleep with married men still expect everyone else to protect their dignity. To make it up to both of you, I’m going to do exactly what you asked and help spread this story all over the internet. Now, let’s take a look at what they actually did and see just how filthy this affair really is.”

The moment I finished speaking, the image on the screen changed.

What came next made many of the guests look away in embarrassment.

Alongside the video were years of records showing that Ethan had paid the down payment on Blair’s apartment, covered her shop rent and renovation costs, and made countless transfers to her.

Everyone turned toward Blair.

Their faces showed nothing but shock and disgust.

She screamed.

“Oh my God! Erin is insane! How dare she? Turn it off! Turn it off right now! The video is fake. It’s a deepfake! She used AI to frame us!”

Ethan’s face tightened.

He rushed to the AV console and yanked out the plug.

The room fell silent again.

But it was far from over.

“Ethan, look!”

Daniel, one of Ethan’s colleagues, suddenly shouted from across the room.

“You and Blair are trending everywhere! Several major influencers have reposted recordings of Erin’s livestream. She published an investigative report too. Every platform is tearing you two apart!”

Blair threw herself into Ethan’s arms, sobbing.

“Ethan, oh my God! Erin is terrifying! She’s been setting us up from the beginning. She pretended she’d apologize, then deliberately destroyed me. She’s jealous because you’re good to me. She wants to ruin my brand and my entire life!”

Ethan patted her back while trying to contact me.

Then he discovered that I had blocked his number and every social media account he used.

His face darkened.

“Great,” he said bitterly. “She puts everything online, then refuses to answer me? I’m calling her parents. I want to know if they have any idea what their daughter has done. I will never let a woman this calculating be the mother of my child.”

He picked up his phone, but Daniel snatched it out of his hand.

“Ethan, enough. Erin had the evidence independently authenticated. The video and documents show no signs of editing or manipulation. You cheated. Own what you did. Erin just lost her baby, and both of her parents died in a car crash. Haven’t you hurt her enough? At a time like this, instead of being with your wife, you’re throwing a hotel party for another woman. And now you want to drag her dead parents into this? She’s your wife, Ethan. She’s not your enemy.”

Ethan did not move.

He only stared at Daniel.

“Is that true?”

Daniel looked even more shocked than he did.

“Don’t tell me you still don’t know about her miscarriage or her parents’ deaths.”

Ethan knew Daniel well.

Daniel would never make up a story about someone’s death.

He grabbed Daniel’s arm, and his voice began to shake.

“Tell me. When did it happen?”

“On the afternoon of May ninth. An ambulance picked Erin up on Rainier Avenue South after she was nearly hit by a motorcycle. She miscarried and started hemorrhaging. When her parents found out, they raced to Harborview in the middle of the storm and were involved in a serious crash. Her father died at the scene. Her mother was rushed into trauma surgery. Her injuries were severe, and she had a complicated medical history. You knew her condition better than anyone, and every other specialist capable of performing that surgery was either already operating or out of Seattle. Erin called you more than seventy times. You didn’t answer once.”

Daniel’s expression changed as he continued.

“She was desperate, Ethan. She was still on an operating table herself, but she used a hand covered in blood to sign her mother’s emergency surgery consent form. By the time you finally called her, her mother was gone and the baby couldn’t be saved either. I don’t know why she never told you in the end, but I’ll never forget seeing her outside the OR, crying so hard she couldn’t stand. Even the nurses were crying that day.”

Ethan went white.

***

It was not as if Erin had never tried to tell him.

She had.

There had been more than seventy desperate calls.

The death certificate had been sticking out of her bag.

She had told him the truth through tears at the pet boutique.

If Ethan had asked one more question or tried to verify what she said even once, he would have known.

But he had done nothing.

He was smart enough to piece together why Erin had been unable to focus that day.

The place where she had been nearly hit was only a few steps from Canlis.

That was where she had seen the husband who was supposed to take her to a prenatal appointment kissing another woman.

He could not imagine how she had endured losing her baby and both of her parents alone.

Now he understood why the sweater had finally made her snap.

He also understood what the look in her eyes had meant before she left.

When he put the cooling gel on her face, he had seen the disgust in her eyes.

At the time, he had assumed she was still angry and would get over it in a few days.

By then, she had already given up on him completely.

“Ethan, are you all right?”

Seeing that he could barely stand, Blair hurried over to steady him.

“Oh my God, everyone is attacking us! Erin has completely ruined me. How was I supposed to know she’d already miscarried? If she hadn’t deliberately used the baby to provoke me, why would I have sent her that video?”

Ethan froze.

His expression turned cold as he looked at Blair.

“You sent Erin that video? Why the hell would you do that? And didn’t you say you saw her parents at the supermarket? They were already dead by then. Who exactly did you see?”

Blair faltered.

Realizing she had contradicted herself, she quickly changed her story.

“I… I must’ve mistaken someone else for them. Besides, she called me first and humiliated me. She said you’d give all your assets to her baby and that I was nothing but a tool to you. I only wanted to make her angry. Ethan, everyone online is calling me a homewrecker. You can’t abandon me now! The baby is gone anyway. Why stay with some jealous woman who only works in production support? I have my own brand. I can give you children too. Divorce her, okay?”

Ethan had always indulged Blair before.

This time, he shoved her away.

“Erin is not a loser! She’s my wife. Why shouldn’t she be angry? Do you think I don’t know what you wanted from me? My money, my career, and my social status. You wanted to use me to keep up your image as a successful businesswoman. Did you honestly think I’d abandon my wife and child for you and then let you get pregnant with my child? While you were in the shower, I put a contraceptive pill in your milk.”

His face hardened.

“Blair, I never loved you. I treated you well because your passion whenever you talked about your career reminded me of the woman Erin used to be. All these years, I left Erin again and again to come running to you. When did she ever come after you first? You were always the one provoking her. I could give you money. I could indulge you. But I never planned to marry you, and I never intended to let anyone replace Erin. Don’t contact me again. And don’t ever let me hear you insult her again.”

Blair stared at him in disbelief.

She even stopped crying.

She could not understand how the man who had indulged her only days earlier had suddenly changed so completely.

Ethan ignored her and strode toward the door.

A man in a suit and gold-rimmed glasses stepped into his path.

“Mr. Walker, I’m Erin Carter’s attorney. Ms. Carter has retained me to file for divorce and trace marital assets transferred during the marriage.”

The lawyer turned to Blair with a polite smile.

“This concerns you too, Ms. Harper.”

“What does this have to do with me?”

“Mr. Walker used substantial marital funds to cover your apartment purchase, business expenses, and direct transfers to you. My client intends to trace those funds and recover the portion that legally belongs to her.”

Blair collapsed onto the floor.

Ethan seemed unable to believe that Erin would truly divorce him.

He lost control and shouted.

“No! Erin wouldn’t really divorce me. I won’t agree to it. Get out of my way. I’m going to find her and ask her myself!”

The lawyer remained polite but did not move aside.

“One more thing. Ms. Carter asked me to tell you not to look for her. She doesn’t want to see you again, and her flight left Seattle ten minutes ago. Whether you agree or not, you’ll be served with the divorce petition and summons shortly.”
