“I’m talking about Blythe. Your wife, Blythe.”

Kieran’s frown deepened.

But then he remembered Preston’s love for pranks and gave a short, humorless laugh.

“You actually have time to play along with her little act?”

“Have you dealt with your own family’s mess yet? If not, don’t bother me with this nonsense.”

“Kieran, what the hell are you talking about?”

“How could I possibly joke about something like this?”

“I got her out of that place myself and drove her to the hospital.”

“Neither of you ever contacted me, so I’m calling to check in!”

Kieran was silent for two seconds.

“I don’t have time for this. I have to stay with Carla. She just had surgery.”

With that, he hung up.

A faint sense of unease pricked at him, but when he thought about the constant conflict between me and Carla, he shoved the feeling down.

In his mind, even if something had happened to me, I must have brought it on myself.

After the call ended, Preston stared at his phone, his expression darkening.

Just as he was about to turn off the screen, a news alert popped up.

“Mrs. Vitale, Blythe Sinclair, Died Last Night Under Suspicious Circumstances, Suspected Abuse Before Death…”

Preston tapped the link.

The homepage was emblazoned with the word “Exclusive” over a series of blurred crime scene photos.
