I held the ring between my fingers.

“Alessio.”

“Mm.”

“Pursuing me again means I can say no.”

“You can.”

“It means I can take my time deciding.”

“You can.”

“It also means you might have to wait in line.”

He paused.

“Is there someone ahead of me?”

The sudden nervousness in his voice made me laugh.

“Not at the moment.”

Alessio let out a breath he seemed to have been holding.

Beside us, the vendor was trying so hard not to laugh her shoulders were shaking.

“You should take this one. He’s handsome, and he’s willing to wait in line. That’s a rare combination.”

Alessio turned to her and said, very seriously, “Thank you.”

The vendor finally lost it, laughing so hard she almost pulled the tablecloth off her stall.

I looked down at the ring, then handed it back to Alessio.

The light in his eyes seemed to dim for a second.

Then I held out my hand.

“Well? Aren’t you going to put it on me?”

Alessio froze.

I looked at him.

“To be clear, I’m just trying it on.”

The light came back into his eyes, brighter this time.

“All right.”

He picked up the ring, his movements as careful as if he were signing a multi-billion-dollar contract.

As the ring neared my finger, he stopped.

“Does it hurt?”

I looked at his hand, tense with nerves.

“You haven’t even put it on yet.”

He said, his voice low, “I don’t want to make you uncomfortable again.”

I was quiet for a second.

Then I moved my hand a little closer.

“You won’t.”

The ring slid smoothly over my knuckle.

The size was perfect.

Not too loose, not too tight.

Alessio looked down at it for a long moment, and the corner of his mouth finally lifted in a faint smile.
