Two Star Healers And A Forgotten Fated Mate Chapter 03

Two Star Healers And A Forgotten Fated Mate Chapter 03

Back at my station, a coworker hesitated before stepping over to me.

“Did you break things off with Dr. Olson?”

Cameron hadn’t verbally agreed to end our bond, but as far as I was concerned, our fated mate bond was already dead.

I nodded.

The coworker let out a quiet breath, then leaned in to whisper.

“That makes sense now. A rogue caused a disturbance earlier and shoved Dr. Simmons to the ground. Dr. Olson swept her up and rushed her straight to the ER.”

“I thought it was weird at the time—she barely hit the floor, but he panicked like she’d been fatally wounded.”

My brows pulled tight with worry. “Is Amelia alright? Did she hurt her hands?”

Even though my inner wolf still ached from all the hurt they’d caused me, my feet moved on their own toward the emergency wing.

Back in school, Amelia had thrown an arm over my shoulders more than once, vowing out loud. “I’m gonna become the best heart healer this pack’s ever seen!”

If she’d damaged her hands, she’d never be able to hold a scalpel again.

My mind spun with worst-case scenarios.

I rushed over to her hospital bed, breathless. “Amelia, are you okay?”

She forced a smile when she spotted me. “It’s nothing bad, just a sprained ankle.”

I’d barely relaxed when Cameron’s cold voice cut through the air beside us. “Are you happy now, Penelope?”

I blinked at him, confused. “Happy about what?”

Cameron’s gaze held zero warmth, sharp with mockery. “Amelia rushed over to try and calm your tantrum, and that’s how the rogue got to her. This is all your fault.”

Amelia grabbed his arm quickly, trying to pull him back. “Cameron, this has nothing to do with Penelope.”

He ignored her completely, his eyes locked hard on mine. “Why can’t you ever grow up? Everyone’s always forced to tiptoe around your moods. Do you think you’re some spoiled princess?”

“You’re so clumsy and shortsighted half the time. The only reason I’ve put up with all your outbursts this long is your family’s standing as Norhaven’s Alpha and Luna line.”

Silence. Thick, suffocating silence.

My inner wolf froze stiff in my mind, unable to draw breath.

“Does that mean he only bonded with me, not out of love or the Moon Goddess’s fated tie, but just for my family’s status?”

I couldn’t find an answer for her, my eyes burning hot with tears.

Cameron seemed to realize his words had cut too deep, softening his tone slightly. “Just try to be more level-headed from now on, okay?”

He lifted a hand, ready to pat my head like he always did to soothe me.

I twisted my head away and stepped backward. “Dr. Olson. We’ve ended things. Don’t touch me again.”

Cameron let out a bitter, disbelieving laugh. “Penelope, when are you gonna drop this petty act?”

Even Amelia shot me a disapproving look. “Penelope, don’t let pride drive you apart.”

Truthfully, the two of them were identical in one awful way—neither of them could ever take my words, my feelings, or me seriously.

I pulled a hollow, mocking smile to my lips and turned to walk away.

After that, Cameron went into a one-sided cold war with me, and I made a point to avoid him at all costs. We didn’t exchange a single word for two full weeks.

As the hospital’s most prominent healer, gossip about Cameron never died down in the clinic.

People whispered about how he brought beef bone broth to Amelia’s ward every single morning to help her sprain heal faster.

Word spread that they’d co-authored a groundbreaking paper for the Healer Chronicle, earning them an official award from the Global Wolf Healer Alliance.

When coworkers asked me about their relationship, I only shook my head. “I don’t keep up with their lives.”

One afternoon, Amelia blocked my path.

She grabbed the sleeve of my scrubs like it was second nature. “You’re fighting with Cameron and shutting me out too? We’ve been friends for years.”

“You two are both way too stubborn. I’ll be the middle ground here—just swallow your pride and talk to him, yeah?”

Staring at the girl I’d known my whole life, a cold unfamiliarity washed over me.

I’d known her far longer than I’d known Cameron.

I hadn’t done anything wrong at all.

So why did she always pick his side, no matter what happened?
