Twenty-four Hours Later, My Don Regreted Chapter 07

Luca shrank back, intimidated by our numbers. He ground his teeth in bitter resentment and stormed out of

my house.

Three more days passed after Luca’s visit. His parents arrived at my door to talk.

They sat and cut straight to the core of the issue.

“Elena, what will it take for you to drop everything? You’ve ruined the Carter family’s public reputation.”

“We won’t press charges for the wedding day and will cover all property damage. I share blame for Luca’s mistakes, and as another woman, I beg you to stop dragging this out.”

I watched them calmly.

Luca’s parents were cold, calculating schemers. Their sudden kindness only stemmed from the secret audio recordings I held over them.

Without that evidence, they would’ve treated me far crueler.

The night before my wedding, while digging up dirt on Chiara, I obtained the damning audio file. It exposed how the woman who’d pretended warmth toward me spoke viciously behind my back.

“That Elena seemed fine when I first met her. But after getting to know her, she’s just tacky and common through and through. Once you tie the knot with her, you’ve got to keep her in line where she belongs.”

Luca didn’t pause to think before agreeing. “Whatever. Do what you like with her. Just bump up the money

you send Chiara every month.”

Recalling those revolting words, I just pulled a cold sneer to my lips.

“I’ll drop all matters for one million US dollars. Hand me the check, and I’ll sign divorce papers immediately.”

“If you refuse, every mafia family in Boston will learn the full truth about the Carter heir.”

The mother’s face turned livid.

For mafia clans, reputation mattered above all else.

She quickly buried her rage and forced a hollow smile. “Elena, you must understand our cash flow shortages. Can you file for divorce first, and I’ll wire the money afterward?”

I let out a bitter laugh. Even now, she tried to string me along with empty promises.

“That arrangement works for me. I’ll start leaking every dirty secret of the Carter family today. The leaks stop only the second the funds hit my bank account.”

I stood to leave, and panic flickered across her features. She gritted her teeth and conceded. “Fine. One

million it is.”

She pulled a checkbook from her coat, filled out the million-dollar slip, and slid it across the table. She spun to storm toward the door, but I called out before she could exit.

“Tell Luca to meet me at the law firm at two this afternoon. I will sign the divorce papers then.”

I didn’t spare her a single glance and slammed the front door shut.

That afternoon, Luca and I met our respective lawyers. We finalized all divorce paperwork in front of our

family counsel.

As we prepared to leave, Luca grabbed my wrist. I ripped my arm free in an instant.

“Touch me one more time, and I’ll end you.”

He flinched hard and pulled his hand away.

I traveled abroad with my parents for the following month. The wedding brawl had become infamous across Boston’s mafia circles, so a long trip was much needed.

After half a month overseas, the three of us could finally breathe easy again.

Back in Boston, I helped my parents rebuild the family’s businesses.

Daily life slowly slipped back into its ordinary rhythm.

One day while running errands, I spotted Luca standing on the sidewalk.

He looked gaunt, exhausted, and utterly miserable.
