The hospital room door opened.

Margaret hurried in, leaning on Sophia’s arm.

“James! I heard Emily was taken to the hospital. What happened?”

Sophia peeked around to look at me in the bed, and a quick flash of satisfaction crossed her face before she masked it with a worried frown.

She turned to James with teary eyes. “James, is Emily okay? Lucas’s safe, it was a misunderstanding.”

“Don’t be mad at Emily; she didn’t mean any harm.”

At the sound of Sophia’s voice, James shot to his feet.

He stared at her with eyes like ice.

Margaret kept chirping in the background. “She’s right, James. Emily has always been impulsive.”

“It’s frustrating for her, but that doesn’t make her a threat. Just let it go.”

James’s hands balled into fists. His knuckles cracked.

“She miscarried,” he said, voice trembling. The words hung in the air.

Margaret went pale. She stared at my stomach with her mouth hanging open.

“She miscarried? She was pregnant? When… when did this happen?”

Sophia’s face drained of color too. She took an involuntary step back.

James turned to her, his eyes hard. No more warmth.

“You told me Emily attacked you this afternoon. And that she took Lucas?”

Sophia’s gaze darted around. She stammered, “I… I was just guessing. Lucas was gone, and I was so scared…”

“Guessing?” James took a step closer, his eyes bloodshot.

“Because of what you assumed, my child… is gone.”

Sophia burst into tears. She reached for his sleeve.

“James, I swear I didn’t know Emily was pregnant.”

“And even though this one is gone, you still have Lucas, he’s your son.”

James ripped his arm away from her, his face full of undisguised disgust.

“Get out.

Margaret rushed to Sophia’s defense.

“James! Don’t blame her, she was only worried about Lucas!”

Listening to them, my stomach turned.

“Get out,” I said weakly.

The room went quiet. Everyone looked at me.

“I said leave my room. Do you even hear me?”

James immediately stepped in front of my bed, blocking them. “Mom, take her and leave. Don’t come near Emily again.”

Margaret looked like she wanted to argue, but James’s expression stopped her.

Sophia bit her lip, furious, and let herself be led out.
