Too Late to Beg: I’m No Longer Yours Chapter 06

That afternoon, Professor Callahan called me into his office.

His expression was grim.

“The department received a complaint about you.”

“Protocol dictates I forward this to Student Affairs, but I wanted to hear your side first.”

I glanced at his monitor. The sender of the email was Hayes Whitmore.

The email claimed I was emotionally unstable. That I was a control freak who manipulated those around me. That! had fled the country and was at risk of self–harm. He formally requested the university suspend my enrollment.

Attached to the email were several chat screenshots.

All heavily doctored.

My desperate texts demanding the necklace back were cropped to make me look hysterical.

My texts asking Brie for my money were cropped into vicious extortion.

Cutting off Cole’s allowance was framed as financial abuse.

There was even a clinical evaluation.

It read:

“Suspected Paranoid Personality Disorder.”

The signature belonged to a counseling clinic in Chicago.

My stomach churned violently at the sight of that fake diagnosis.

I pulled out my phone and looked at Professor Callahan.

“If you don’t mind, I suggest we call the sender right now.”

He paused for a moment.

“Go ahead.”

I dialed Hayes’s number and put him on speaker.

He picked up quickly

“Nova. You’re finally willing to talk

My voice was deadpan

You filed a complaint with my professor?”

Hayes paused.

Tm just worried about you.”

“With the state you’re in, you shouldn’t be alone in a foreign country.”

I looked up at Professor Callahan.

“And the psychiatric evaluation?”

Hayes fell silent.

A few seconds later, Delaney’s voice floated over the line.

“Nova, please don’t blame Hayes.”

“I know a therapist. I just wanted to help you get evaluated.”

“You really obsess over things too much.”

A laugh ripped out of my throat.

“I wasn’t there. I never consented. I was never tested.”

“And you just magically diagnosed me?”

Dead silence on the other end.

Hayes’s tone darkened.

“Nova, we’re not enemies.”

“Drop the lawsuits and come home.”

“Be a good girl and stop this nonsense. I’ll compensate you for the necklace. I’ll pay back the company money

eventually.”

I spoke softly

“Hayes. Are you afraid I’m making a scene? Or are you terrified I’ll hand over the proof of your embezzlement?”

He stopped breathing.

Professor Callahan looked up at me.

I kept going.

“And as for that fake diagnosis.”

“I’ve already contacted my lawyer.”

“If you harass my university again, I’m calling the cops.”

Hayes’s breathing grew frantic.

“Nova. Does it really have to be this way?”

“I just wanted you to calm down.”

I glared at the complaint email on the monitor.

“You just wanted me to shut up.”
