Three Years in Europe for Everyone—Except His Pregnant Wife Chapter 04

Three Years in Europe for Everyone—Except His Pregnant Wife Chapter 04

After a night’s sleep, my body felt far less run-down.

As I was leaving the Grant Estate, the home I’d shared with Ethan for five years, my eyes fell on the peach tree out in the yard.

It stuck out like a sore thumb.

Without a second thought, I phoned a crew of workers to cut it down. And the newly-planted pear tree too.

A sharp sense of satisfaction washed over me as I walked away.

I’d barely moved into my luxury highrise apartment in Ridgefield, CT. I hadn’t even started unpacking when Ethan’s call came through.

“Babe, We’re already at the airport. Where are you?”

A cold smirk tugged at my mouth.

“You’re over there with your family. What would an outsider like me be doing there?”

“See you off? I’ve got better things to do with my time.”

Ethan’s tone softened a little.

“Come on, don’t throw a childish fit.”

“This is a work posting, not a vacation. Three years will fly by. Just wait for me to get back, okay?”

He still thought I was just jealous and throwing a petty tantrum.

To him, those three years might as well have been three days.

He completely ignored the fine print of his company contract—he was barred from coming back stateside for the full three-year term.

If I’d kept that baby, I would’ve been stuck giving birth, raising, and caring for the child all on my own. And he’d just waltz home three years later, ready for the kid to call him Dad!

My voice turned icy.

“I don’t wait around for anyone. Not even you.”

Out of nowhere, Rae’s voice carried over the line.

“Ethan, don’t forget what we’ve got to take care of.”

Ethan immediately started laying out orders for me.

“Oh right. Rae has several silk garments at my parents’ place. They need hand-washing and sealed up in vacuum bags.”

“We left in such a rush, and the house is in a mess. Get someone over to clean it.”

“And water the peach and pear trees in the yard once every day, if you can.”

“Rae’s grandma lives out in the suburbs. I’ll send you her address in a minute.”

“You’re gonna have to swing by and check on her three times a week from now on.”

“Grab some gifts for the elderly woman, eat with her and talk with her.”

“Rae’s heading overseas with me, so she can’t look after her grandma. That’s gonna fall on you. I know it’s asking a lot.”

He spoke like he was giving orders to household staff, totally taking it for granted.

Worried I might drag my feet, he tried sweet-talking me like he was tossing me a reward.

“Eighty percent of what I earn goes straight into your bank account. I’ll keep depositing money there every month without fail.”

“We’re family. We need to stick together and help each other out especially through big moments like this.”

I burned with anger and shot back sharply.

“Ethan Grant, you can play king all you want, but you sure aren’t cut out for it!”

“You have zero right to order me around anymore. We’re get—”

I never got to finish saying “getting divorced”. Over the phone, I heard the airport boarding announcement for their flight to Paris blare in the background.

Ethan’s voice turned rushed.

“Alright, drop the attitude. We have to board now.”

“I’ll give you a call once I land in Paris. Gotta go.”

He hung up.

Before I blocked every last one of his contacts, I fired off one final text.

Yvonne: [I put my abortion-procedure paperwork and divorce petition inside the lining of your suitcase.]

Yvonne: [You left me off the family list for this overseas posting. From this day on, there is no spot left for you in my life.]
