When Holly showed up, Chase and the Holdens had been posting missing–person flyers for two weeks.

They knew it was useless, but they didn’t know what else to do.

Trent sat on a chair, pulling at his hair.

“My sister didn’t leave on her own–someone must’ve helped her. But who? After she got sick, most of her

friends dropped off. Who’s still in her corner?”

No one answered. None of them could think of anyone.

That’s when Holly knocked.

Piper recognized her first.

As one of Mara’s former scholarship students, Piper had always resented Holly. Holly got better grades. She went to a better college.

At least Holly was quiet. She didn’t know how to work a room.

When Holly chose a faraway city, Piper stopped worrying about her.

Years without contact—she’d nearly forgotten Holly existed.

But the second she saw her, she remembered.

“Holly Marsh. What are you doing here?”

A thought shot through her: Mara’s disappearance had something to do with Holly.

The next second, she knew she was right.

“I’m here on behalf of Mara Holden to handle the title transfer af 42 Birch Lane in Westbrook. My client states that the property was transferred without her knowledge or consent. She demands Piper Vance return the deed immediately–or she will file suit.”

Her tone was flat. Her face was stone.

Chase lunged first.

“You’ve seen her. You know where she is.”

Holly stepped back.

“I haven’t seen her, sir. This was handled over the phone. She also instructed me to tell you: stop looking. She doesn’t want to see any of you. At least not right now.”

Chase’s shoulders sagged

Walter and Eileen Holden came forward, leaning on each other.

“Is she… is she doing all fight?”

Holly shook her head, strictly business.

“I’m here for the property. I don’t have any other information. You’ll have to decide how to handle this.”

Walter nodded quickly.

“We’ll change it. We’ll change it back. That house was always Mara’s. We made a mistake. We’ll go to the

city office first thing tomorrow.”

Holly gave a curt nod.

“Good.”

But Piper wasn’t happy. Westbrook was about to be rezoned. In a few years, that house would be worth a

fortune.

She gritted her teeth. She couldn’t help herself.

“Mr. and Mrs. Holden–you said that house was a gift to me.”

Before they could answer, Trent cut in.

“It’s the Holden family’s property. We can give it and we can take it back.”

Sasha’s eyes narrowed.

“Piper, you used to say you didn’t care about things like that.

In the time Mara had been gone, they’d all started seeing Piper clearly. She wasn’t the innocent girl she pretended to be.

Chase was already thinking about divorce–the only thing holding him back was the baby.

Just then, Holly smiled.

“By the way, while I was checking the title, I found something interesting. Want to see?”

She pulled a stack of photos from her bag.

In them, Piper was arm–in–arm with another man, very close.

Chase’s pupils contracted.

Trent blurted out, “Isn’t that your old boyfriend?”
