Three Hundred Sixty Letters And A Death Certificate That Was A Lie Chapter 06

By the time the two of them rushed back to Maple Creek, the crowd outside the Mercer house had

already dispersed.

Only a couple of villagers still sat under the trees by the gate, talking about what they’d just

‘witnessed.

“I’ve never seen a car that fancy in my life.”

“Who even is Evelyn? How does she know people like that?”

“You’re clueless. Didn’t you hear? Evelyn’s parents used to run a factory in town. They made it big

in Ashford later. Now they’re a well-known wealthy family in the city.”

Gavin didn’t hear any of it. He just walked into the yard in a daze.

His eyes locked onto the dark, dried blood on the ground.

It had turned nearly black with time, spreading in a long, uneven trail all the way to the door.

“Evelyn! Babe! Where are you?!”

He searched the entire house like a madman.

The back rooms. The shed.

Nothing.

Only Margaret, lying weakly on the bed, still soiled and groaning in pain.

Gavin covered his nose, gagging, and quickly waved Vanessa over.

“Vanessa, clean her up and change her clothes. I’m going to find Evelyn.”

Vanessa’s face twisted instantly.

Disgust flashed across her expression, but she didn’t dare argue.

She grabbed a cloth and walked up to Margaret, muttering under her breath.

“You useless old hag… why won’t you just die already? All you do is drag Gavin down…”

Meanwhile, Gavin stormed out of the house and grabbed a man standing near the gate.

His face was pale as death.

“Sir-my wife. Where is she? She’s not home. Did someone take her to the hospital?”

After everything they had just witnessed-Gavin abandoning his bleeding pregnant wife to take Vanessa to the hospital-the villagers looked at him with pure contempt.

“Take her to the hospital? You think she was waiting around for you?”

“Her family from Ashford came and picked her up themselves. She’s gone, Gavin Mercer. Your wife took your kid and left you behind!’

The words hit him like a thunderclap.

Gavin staggered back. His body went weak.

He should’ve seen it coming.

Evelyn was never truly alone.

Even after she defied her family to marry him, she was still the Sterling family’s only daughter.

Of course they wouldn’t just abandon her.

And suddenly… it all made sense.

Her talk of divorce wasn’t a threat. It was real.

She didn’t want this life anymore.

His mind drifted back to that day at the small chapel.

Evelyn knelt beside him, hands clasped, eyes clear and bright.

“May God bless us. I, Evelyn Sterling, married Gavin Mercer today without regret. May we live in harmony, understand each other, and love each other until we’re old.”

Back then, he had looked at her like the whole world had gone silent, like she was the only light left

in existence.

Her voice still lingered in his ears soft, warm, devoted.

When did everything change?

Gavin couldn’t bear to think any further.

Fear rose inside him like a wildfire, burning through his chest until he could barely breathe.

“Evelyn! Evelyn!”

He screamed her name again and again.

And then he ran toward Ashford.
