Three Hundred Sixty Letters And A Death Certificate That Was A Lie Chapter 03

Everyone stared at me like I had lost my mind.

Afraid I’d snap again, Vanessa quickly led all the guests away.

That left only me and Gavin standing in the middle of the wreckage, locked in a silent standoff.

He opened his mouth like he wanted to yell at me, but his words died when his eyes dropped to my swollen belly. In the end, he sighed.

“Evelyn… did I hurt you? I’m sorry.”

He reached out to touch my face, while I leaned back and avoided him.

Gavin pulled his hand away awkwardly.

“I know you’re still mad about me leaving for Jamouth…”

The pain in my lower abdomen flared again with my rising emotions. I braced myself against the table.

“It’s not something worth being mad about. It’s your decision.”

“Gavin Mercer, we’re getting divorced. You go abroad. I won’t stop you.”

“What a joke.”

Gavin frowned, a dismissive curve forming at his lips.

“If we divorce, what about the baby?”

“I’ll raise it myself.”

Each word came out slow and steady.

After all, in my last life, I’d done exactly that for thirty years.

Whether Gavin existed as a father or not… made no difference.

“Evelyn, do you really think you, a woman, are capable of that?”

His patience snapped.

He squatted down, cleaning up the mess as he spoke, like he was issuing a verdict.

“I’m going to Jamouth no matter what. You can’t stop me.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

Without saying anything, I turned and walked into the back room.

That night, I didn’t sleep well.

Thunder rolled outside, wind shaking the house.

I dreamed of the night we ran away together.

Gavin held a bouquet of wildflowers and brought me to a small chapel.

Lightning lit up his face, burning with emotion.

That young, ambitious boy knelt on the prayer mat with devout eyes and clasped hands.

“I, Gavin Mercer, take Evelyn Sterling as my wife. From this day on, she’s more important than my own life.”

“Please bless me. Let me love her forever. Let me protect her forever.”

But later… on another stormy night just like this one… our son had a high fever.

I ran all the way to the County Medical Center holding him, collapsing to my knees outside the ward, praying for his health.

I cried until my voice broke. And still, the man who promised to love me forever never came.

I dreamed of freezing winters washing clothes in ice-cold rivers until my hands went numb.

I dreamed of climbing mountains to dig wild greens, only to fall down steep slopes and break my body in silence.

I dreamed of carrying two children while working the fields until exhaustion swallowed me whole.

I dreamed of a house filled with stench, and Margaret’s resentful eyes staring at me like I was trash.

And finally… I saw it again.

The moment I died in my last life, Gavin looked at me from a distance—detached, like I was nothing.

I woke up drenched in sweat.

A whistle echoed through Maple Creek.

“Wake up! We’ve got thieves in the village! Lock your doors and windows! No women or children outside!”

Gavin shot up beside me, frantically pulling on his clothes.

I grabbed his wrist.

“Thieves are in the village. Where do you think you’re going?”

“I need to find Vanessa. She’s alone—she’ll be scared. I have to protect her!”

“Gavin Mercer!”

I yanked on him, trying to get up, but my pregnant body made every movement heavy and clumsy.

“She has a brother. She doesn’t need you. But here? You’re the only man in this house!”

“You’re really going to leave your mother, me, and your child behind?”

Seeing the tears in my eyes, he sighed again.

He pulled my hand off him.

“Lock the doors. Take care of Mom. Nothing’s going to happen.”

“I’ll just check on her. Once I know Vanessa is safe, I’ll come right back.”

There was no stopping him.

I got out of bed and went to secure the windows and doors.

The moment I locked the front door, something inside the back room shattered violently.

A tall shadow leapt through the window.

A man stood there with a knife in his hand, staring at me coldly.
