They Threw Us in the Snow. I Owned Everything. Chapter 09

His name was Tom Avery, and he drove nine hours from Ohio with a shoebox of evidence on the

passenger seat.

We met at a coffee shop near my dad’s garage. Tom was forty, soft-spoken, wearing a flannel shirt and a

wedding ring he’d never taken off. He pushed the shoebox across the table like it might bite.

“Her real name is Sharon Lynn Pruitt,” he said. “We got married six years ago. Never divorced. She left me with forty thousand dollars of debt in my name and a fake pregnancy.”

I opened the box.

Photos. Police reports. Newspaper clippings.

Sharon in Tampa, four years ago, with a car dealership owner. Pregnant. Then not. He lost three hundred

thousand dollars.

Sharon in Scottsdale, two years ago, with a dentist. Pregnant. Then a “tragic miscarriage” right after he signed a house over to her.

And Sharon in Ohio, with Tom. Pregnant. He’d painted a nursery. Bought a crib. Then he came home one day to an empty bank account and a silicone belly in the trash can.

“She buys them online,” Tom said quietly. “Different sizes. She moves up a size every few weeks. Prints fake ultrasounds off the internet. Then right before anybody can go to a real doctor’s appointment, she disappears. Or ‘loses’ the baby and needs comfort. Expensive comfort.”

On the left, the ultrasound photo Sloane had posted on Instagram two months ago. “Our little prince

On the right, a stock image from a medical website. Identical. Down to the tiny white watermark that someone had cropped badly at the corner.

“How did you find me?” I asked.

Tom looked down at his coffee. “I saw your stream. I saw her hand on camera in that Christmas video. She was wearing your grandma’s ring.” He swallowed, “She wore my mom’s ring too. Sold it in Pittsburgh. I

never got it back.”

He pushed the box toward me.

“I don’t want money. I just want her to stop.”

I thanked him. I photographed everything, saved it five ways, and sent it all to Priya.
