They Thought I Was Duped, Unaware I Had Truly Been Reborn Chapter 07

A wedding that had begun absurdly had ended just as absurdly.

The scandal between Wade and his so-called best friend became public knowledge overnight.

People talked. Coworkers whispered. Everywhere he went, fingers pointed.

Because Brynn was pregnant, Wade posted bail and got her released.

At the same time, my attorney sent Wade a formal demand letter.

Return my $1.2 million from the joint account.

Return my heirloom sapphire bracelet.

The letter was delivered directly to his office.

He had seven days. After that, he’d be getting court papers.

And once the case entered the legal system, I would pursue criminal charges.

The bracelet was worth enough to qualify as felony theft.

If convicted, he could face serious prison time.

The day he received the letter, he bombarded me with calls and texts like a madman.

I ignored every single one, then blocked him completely.

Three days later, he showed up at my office building.

—

Just three days, and he looked utterly haggard.

The shirt I used to iron crisp for him every morning was now a wrinkled mess.

“Simone…” He reached out to grab me, but I dodged him just in time.

His hand hung frozen in midair before dropping weakly. Hurt flickered in his eyes.

“Simone, do we really have to do this?”

I laughed. “Making a scene? I’m just taking back what’s rightfully mine.”

“Wade, spare me your PUA nonsense. You disgust me.”

He stiffened, disbelief filling his eyes.

“What’s happened to you, Simone? Why are you being so aggressive?”

“You already have five million. Why isn’t that enough? Why do you have to keep pushing this?”

His voice sharpened. “You’re just out to get Brynn.”

I locked eyes with him, steady and unblinking.

“Wade, have you ever stopped to think what would’ve happened if I hadn’t called the police?”

“If Rudy had succeeded—kidnapped me, assaulted me, tortured me?”

The color drained from his face.

His lips moved. A few weak words finally came out.

—

“But… you’re fine now, aren’t you? Why can’t you just let it go?”

I stared at him.

Fine? Just because I survived didn’t erase what they’d done.

What he didn’t know was that in my previous life, I hadn’t survived. I’d died.

“We’re done, Wade.”

Anger instantly flooded his eyes.

“You’re breaking up with me over this? Over something this petty?”

I let out a scoff. “Petty?”

“You cheated, you let Brynn humiliate me over and over, and you got her pregnant—and you think that’s petty?”

His face turned white.

“No—Simone, listen! I don’t love her, I love you. She seduced me. I just—”

“Stop.” My voice cut through, cold and sharp.

“Wade, you and Brynn killed my mother.”

“What makes you think I could ever stay with you after that?”

He froze completely. Then his expression hardened.

“She’s been dead for a year. Why can’t you let it go?”

I turned and walked away, ignoring his furious shouts behind me.

—

Why couldn’t I let it go?

Because some things can never be let go—not in a lifetime.

What stood between us now was a life. My mother’s life.

A blood debt that could never be repaid.
