They Sent Me To Prison For Her, I Bought A Grave For Me Chapter 07

“She’s a Wexley,” Ephraim said evenly. “Of course she comes back to Kingsmere.”

His expression didn’t change.

“And the arrangement between us was never formally called off.”

Behind her back, Jessa clenched her fists until her nails dug into her palms.

Why bring Mirelle back now? She was dying anyway.

Jessa was the Wexleys’ only daughter. If Mirelle returned, Jessa would become the impostor all

over again, and every eye would turn back to Mirelle.

Even with one foot in the grave, she was still taking everything from her.

Crispin looked sick.

“We can’t find her,” he said hoarsely. “Mirelle’s gone.”

Ephraim’s expression darkened. He pulled out his phone and called her again.

No answer.

“I can’t reach her either.”

He turned to Crispin.

“I was only gone a few days. What the hell happened?”

Jessa’s stomach tightened.

“Ephraim, Mirelle changed her name and built a life here,” she cut in. “Even if you want to take her back, that doesn’t mean she’ll

go.”

The guilt in Crispin’s expression began to ease, exactly as Jessa had hoped.

She pressed on.

“Come on. Help him up. We’ll go back to the hotel and keep looking from there.”

That night, Crispin lay awake in his hotel room, staring at the ceiling.

He couldn’t stop seeing Mirelle in that miserable apartment, clutching her old sketchbook against

her chest.

“I’ll never compete with Jessa for another design opportunity.”

Her face had been colorless. Her eyes had been red.

She had looked painfully thin.

How had he not seen it?

A sharp ache seized his chest, leaving him short of breath.

Then his phone lit up with a message from an unknown number.

There was no text.

Only a video.

Crispin tapped it open, and the blood in his veins turned cold.

The footage showed a filthy corner of Westmoor. Several inmates surrounded a frail young woman, kicking and punching her while she curled against the floor.

Mirelle.

One of them pinned her right hand beneath a boot.

“Go ahead,” the woman taunted. “Call your brother. Tell him to come save you.”

The others burst out laughing.

Mirelle shook so violently she could barely breathe. She was in too much pain to cry above a broken

whimper.

Then the woman lifted her foot and brought it down on Mirelle’s hand.

A sickening crack came through the speaker.

Mirelle screamed.

Crispin slammed his fist into the wall.

Blood ran over his knuckles, but he barely felt it.

All he could hear was her scream.

All he could think about was how she had begged him to believe her.

With shaking hands, he typed a reply.

[Who are you? What do you want?]

The response came almost immediately.

[Service alley behind Grafton Row. Come alone. Bring $500,000, and I’ll give you the truth about

what happened three years ago.]

Crispin grabbed his coat and headed for the door.

Jessa stepped into his path.

“Where are you going? Did someone find Mirelle? I’ll come with you.”

“Get out of my way.”

He tore his arm from her grip without looking back.

The service alley behind Grafton Row was nearly pitch-black.

Crispin entered without waiting for security or calling the police. Only when a woman stepped from

the shadows did he stop.

He recognized her.

Bryony Kells, the inmate who had run Mirelle’s cellblock at Westmoor.

“Mr. Wexley,” Bryony said with a cruel smile. She took a drag from her cigarette and blew the smoke aside. “It’s been a while.”

Crispin’s jaw tightened.

Bryony laughed.

“Your sweet little sister Jessa promised me $150,000 to keep quiet. She wanted me to sign a statement saying Mirelle injured her hand by accident.”

She flicked ash onto the pavement.

“I did my part. She never paid me.”

Her smile vanished.

“If Jessa won’t honor the deal, I don’t owe her my silence. Give me $500,000, and I’ll tell you

everything that happened to Mirelle inside Westmoor.’

Crispin went still.

Jessa was involved.

The possibility had never even entered his mind.

His voice dropped.

“Why should I believe you?”
