She didn’t attend the trial.

Maybe she didn’t dare.

Maybe she never wanted to see him again.

He didn’t know.

His lips moved, as if he wanted to say something.

But in the end, he said nothing.

Because he knew, too, that nothing he could say would ever matter again.

I floated above the courtroom, looking down at them all.

I was eighteen when I died.

He would be twenty-five when he got out.

He would still have a chance to start over—go to school, get a job, get married, build a family.

I had none of that.

I would never go to college.

I would never find a job.

I would never get married.

I would never have children of my own.

I would never eat Mom’s lasagna again.

I would never see the ocean in California.

All of it was gone.
