They Poisoned My Voice So She Could Steal My Future, Not Knowing I Already Chose a Different One Chapter 08

She was gambling that the federal authorities would go easy on her because she was just a poor, uneducated woman from the countryside.

In the third room, Sophia had completely broken down.

She had been questioned for 48 hours straight. Her makeup was ruined, my sundress wrinkled and dirty.

“I’ll talk! I’ll tell you everything!”

“My parents sold Emily to a guy in the mountains! They said if she disappeared, I could be her!”

“I didn’t mean to leak anything! I just wanted to post on Instagram!”

She pulled at her hair, hysterical. “Let me out! I want to see my sister! I want to see Emily! If she forgives me, you have to let me go!”

I watched the three of them, and the last shred of feeling I had for them vanished.

Commander Thorne looked at me. “You still want to go in?”

I straightened my collar and tightened my belt. “Yeah. They still think this is something small. I need to go in there and make them understand exactly how badly they messed up.”

The door to the interrogation room groaned open. They were all huddled together in a corner, shaking. When they saw me in my uniform, my new Marshal badge on my chest, they all froze.

Sophia’s eyes went wide. “Emily?”

Richard scrambled toward me. “Emily! You’re okay! Tell them this is all a mistake! Tell them to let Sophia go!”

Margaret followed, tears streaming. “Emily, I knew you’d be okay! Save your sister!”

I didn’t move. I just stared at them.

“Save her?” My voice was a low rasp, echoing in the room. “Save her with what? With the arm Buck’s mother stabbed, or the throat you poisoned?”

Richard’s face twitched, then hardened. “Don’t be so dramatic! It was for this family! You’re fine now! You’re in a fancy uniform! What’s the problem?”

He slammed the table. “I’m your father! I raised you! You owe your sister!”

I laughed. A hollow, shaking sound.

“You raised me?” I leaned forward, my hands flat on the table, staring into his eyes.

“You ‘raised me’ by making me repeat three years of high school so I could take Sophia’s tests for her? By selling me to a fifty-year-old man?”

My voice wasn’t loud, but every word dripped with blood and pain.

My father flinched back half a step, his lips trembling as he struggled to find words.

Sophia finally snapped back to reality. She slumped to the floor, her knees buckling beneath her, the sound echoing dully off the concrete floor.

“I’m sorry! I’m so sorry, Emily!”
