“What?”

Mom’s voice shot up, sharp as broken glass.

“Explain yourself! That’s my daughter’s pack house!”

The Lycan with the measuring tape scowled, dropping his tools.

“Lady, you’ve got the wrong idea.”

“This pack house was transferred yesterday. The deed’s in my hand. Original owner was Kaia. She said she had no family left. You her mother?”

“Kaia IS our daughter!”

Dad snapped out of his shock and lunged forward, grabbing him by the collar..

“She’s my pup!”

“Did you trick her into signing something? This pack house belonged to my mother! She’s just a girl –she can’t sell it without our permission!”

The Lycan’s face reddened. He shoved Dad off hard, dusting his shirt with disgust.

“You’re insane.”

“Property deed. Council certification. Bloodline verification. Everything is fully legal.” She’s eighteen. Adult. She can sign whatever she wants. Doesn’t need your permission.”

“Besides, the deed had only her name on it. The transfer’s done. Fully legal. What are you even screaming about?”

Mom’s face contorted.

“She’s still in academy training. She’s not mature enough.”

“That contract’s invalid. You conned her!”

“Conned?”

The Lycan laughed. He pulled copies from his briefcase and slapped them in Mom’s face.

“Take a good look. Transfer certificate. Bank statements.”

“Seven million gold coins. Paid in full. That young pup handled everything clean as a whistle. Nothing underhanded about it-unlike you two causing a scene.’

“She’s the top scorer in this year’s Royal Lycan Academy entrance trials. Too smart for me to con.”

“Seven hundred thousand?”

“Royal Lycan Academy… top scorer?”

Mom and Dad exchanged glances. Their voices died.

A thought struck her. “She took all seven million?”

“Where else would she take it?”

The Lycan was done. “Get out!”

“This pack house is mine now. I want good energy in here. You’re bringing bad luck-get the hell

out!”

He shoved them both out and slammed the door.

The door slammed shut with a deafening crack. The lock snicked into place.

Silence filled the hallway.

Mom leaned against the wall, vision swimming.

Her mind reeled, spinning between the seven million and the title of top scorer.

“Rowan… was he lying?”

“How could Kaia possibly be top scorer?”

“She was always so average as a pup!”

Dad wiped his face. “I don’t know. I don’t remember what she was like back then.”

“That’s not how I remember it, I swear…”

Mom’s eyes were full of confusion.

She realized she couldn’t remember either.

She’d just assumed the pup she didn’t have custody of would never amount to much.

She already had a perfect daughter. The other one’s life didn’t matter.

But that forgotten daughter had become the brightest new star in the entire lycan empire.

Trembling, Mom pulled out her communications crystal and dialed the number she’d just saved.

“Sorry. The number you’re trying to reach is no longer in service.”

She tried to send her a message via the crystal network.

Then realized she’d never even added her.

Mom’s voice cracked. “It’s gone. She deactivated her crystal identifier.”

She whipped around to face Dad.

“Did you do this?”

“Did you tell her to do this?”
