They Fought Over Everything, but They Agreed on One Thing—Not Me Chapter 06

Refusing to accept it, Vivian took the ring and tried to force it onto her finger herself.

But the ring had never been made for her. How could it possibly fit?

After one humiliation after another, Vivian finally lost it. She grabbed glasses from the champagne tower and flung their contents over Grant one after another, crying and screaming the entire time.

“Grant! If you don’t love me, just say so! It’s not like I’d actually cling to you!”

“What are you trying to do tonight? Humiliate me in front of everyone? If you love Natalie, then go after her! Stop dragging me into whatever game the two of you are playing!”

Grant was a prominent figure in the finance world. Being berated in public by his archrival wounded his pride

and stoked his temper, and his face darkened with rage.

He seized Vivian by the arm and lowered his voice.

“We’ll talk about this downstairs.”

But Vivian had been pushed past her limit that night.

She refused to let him touch her. Then she grabbed a man at random and kissed him in front of everyone.

“Grant, listen to me! If you don’t want me, plenty of other men do!”

The woman he had just proposed to was not only causing a scene in public but kissing another man.

Everything Vivian did that night pushed Grant’s buttons.

He stared at Vivian in disbelief, unable to reconcile the woman making a spectacle of herself with the person

he thought he knew.

Even if Natalie had discovered his affair with Vivian that night, she never would have made such an ugly

public scene.

He had always believed Vivian understood how to conduct herself.

Instead, she was even more volatile than Natalie.

That night, Grant said coldly, “Vivian, from now on, you can kiss whoever you want. You and I are finished.”

Then he hurried back to the hospital.

He caught one red light after another, but every time the signal turned green, his feelings seemed to become

a little clearer.

That night, Grant finally understood that he loved Natalie. He loved the nineteen-year-old college student she had once been, and he loved the twenty-five-year-old woman she was now.

From beginning to end, she had been the only woman he truly loved.

He wanted nothing more than to rush to Natalie, drop to one knee, and present her with the ring that had

been custom-made for her.

Then, with utter conviction and all the devotion in his heart, he would ask, “Natalie, will you marry me?”

But now he couldn’t find the woman he loved.

Grant drew a deep breath and drove home again.

When he arrived, a dozen or so movers were carrying boxes and belongings out of the house.

“Who are you?”

The sight of Natalie’s possessions being removed made Grant’s eyes burn with fury.

“Mr. Mercer?”

A middle-aged woman in a tailored white skirt suit stepped out from among the movers.

Grant recognized her as Alexandra Pierce. At twenty-five, she had founded what was now one of the world’s

leading law firms in New York City.

“Do we have a problem?”

e not.” Alexandra gave a faint smile. “But you may want to explain why you used $780,000

ng to my client to buy a condo without her authorization.”

Grant’s throat tightened.

“How do you know that? Natalie is your client?”

Alexandra gave him a dismissive glance and showed no intention of answering.

“Where is Natalie? She’s still injured. She couldn’t have gone far!”

“Mr. Mercer, the two of you have broken up. Where Ms. Bennett chooses to go is no longer any concern of

yours.”

“As her attorney, I’ll take legal action to recover every dollar you used without her authorization. We will also

pursue every legally available claim arising from the financial and emotional harm caused by your years of deception and infidelity.”

As Grant listened, an incredulous laugh escaped him.

“You’re telling me Natalie had already planned to sue me?”

As far as Grant was concerned, Natalie would never take him to court.

Even if she left, she would walk away with nothing rather than risk looking like a gold digger.

But Alexandra and the movers surrounding her made one fact impossible to deny.

Natalie had really left him.
