That night, Leo and I sat in his dorm room and pieced together the memories from both our lives.

“Do you remember what that place was called?” I asked.

“No.” I shook my head. “It wasn’t champagne. It was non-alcoholic sparkling cider for the kids’ table. It looked like wine, but it couldn’t have stained her white dress.”

I paused.

“That charity dinner was a setup,” I continued. “Savannah deliberately provoked me in front of all the donors and reporters, then pretended to be terrified.”

“What everyone saw was the result: the unstable daughter of the Walton family, losing control at another important event.”

“My public image was destroyed. Father lost face. So they had to get rid of me.”

Leo pulled me into his arms.

“I’m sorry,” he said, his voice full of regret. “If only I could have shown up sooner—”
