The peace of Christmas break was short-lived.

I thought that by running to Oregon, the shadow of the Walton name would finally recede.

I was wrong.

In the fall semester of our junior year, Savannah and Ethan suddenly transferred to the University of Oregon.

The public explanation was that Savannah needed a change of environment and that she “wanted to be closer to her sister.”

Ethan stopped me outside the library.

He looked much older than before, his eyes shadowed with exhaustion.

“Eliza, please.” He blocked my path. “Just see her once. She really misses you.”

“I said no.” I looked at him. “Moving here was your decision. Don’t expect me to change mine.”

“She’s sick!” Ethan’s voice rose, drawing glances from nearby students. “She has severe depression and anxiety. The doctor said she needs family support!”

“That’s your problem, not mine.” My voice rose too, my chest feeling as if it were being torn open. “I am not her therapist, and I am not her emotional support animal.”

“How can you be so selfish?” Ethan’s eyes were red.
