My first semester at the University of Oregon was so busy it felt like being swept along by a current.

Readings, papers, seminars. My time was fractured into manageable pieces.

Leo majored in agricultural sciences.

I chose political science and pre-law.

We lived in different dorms but saw each other almost every day. Sometimes we wrote papers together in a corner of the library. Sometimes we went to a small café downtown in Eugene and split a fresh cinnamon roll.

This life was quiet, full, and entirely my own.

So good it almost felt unreal.

Until one day in October, when an unfamiliar Texas number broke through the peace.

“Eliza?”

It was Bryce.

My former fiancé.

His voice was the same as ever, proper and feigning concern.

I said nothing, my thumb hovering over the end call button.

“Wait, don’t hang up,” he said quickly. “I just wanted to warn you to be careful. I heard something.”

My finger paused.

“What did you hear?”

“Your father’s campaign team has held several meetings lately.” Bryce lowered his voice. “They think you’re getting more and more uncontrollable, that you’re a liability to the campaign. They’re discussing whether to send you to a high-end wellness center for ‘emotional management’ before the final push.”

I closed my eyes.
