On the day of my high school graduation, I wore a blue gown and walked onstage as an honors graduate to give a speech.

Below the stage, Leo and his uncle waved enthusiastically, their smiles wide and proud.

On the other side of the venue, I saw my parents.

They were dressed as respectably as ever, but standing in the crowd of ordinary families, they looked out of place.

After the ceremony, they stopped me on my way to the parking lot.

“Eliza,” Mother said, her voice hoarse, “can we talk?”

“There’s nothing to talk about.”

“Please.” Her tears fell. “Five minutes. Just five minutes.”

I raised my hand and glanced at the watch Leo had given me.

“Three minutes.”

Father took a deep breath and put on the sincere expression he did best.

“We know we did a lot of things wrong. We want to make it up to you.”

“It’s too late.”

“Eliza, we are still your parents—”

“You don’t want to make amends.” I looked him in the eye. “You just don’t want to admit you made a bad investment.”
