On the first day of the SSEE, I was in perfect form, answering every question steadily, double-checking my work, making no mistakes.

But on the second day, I woke up a little late and decided to just take a taxi.

As soon as I got in, I put on my headphones for listening practice.

But after one track finished, I still wasn’t at school.

A bad feeling crept up on me. I looked out the window and saw completely unfamiliar streets.

I kept my cool, said I needed the bathroom, and asked the driver to pull over.

Before I could react, a cloth with a sharp, chemical smell was pressed over my mouth and nose. The world went dark.

When I opened my eyes, I was in a shabby little room, my hands and feet tied with thick rope.

“Well, well. Look who it is again, little girl.”

Two men stood over me, their voices mocking.

“You got us locked up for years last time. Didn’t think we’d run into you again.”

“You must have pissed off a lot of people. They don’t even want you taking your SSEE.”

When I recognized their faces, ice ran through my veins. Real fear set in.

Back then, a girl Caleb had rejected got her gang friends to jump him.

They beat him badly, and without thinking, I stepped in and traded myself for him.

That day became my worst nightmare.

“The guy who hired us just said to keep you tied up.”

One of them rubbed his hands together, his eyes greasy and leering, and stepped closer.

“But we’re old friends. Would be a shame to leave you all alone and bored.”

“How about we have some fun?”

His fat, disgusting face got closer. Terrifying memories flooded back, and I started shaking uncontrollably.

Then came a loud crash at the door.

Footsteps, then someone kicked the door in.

On results day, everyone was glued to their computers, waiting.

Caleb was no different, he sat in front of his screen, completely sure of himself.

When the time came, he clicked, state rank 5. Score 1400.

A smug smile crossed his face.

It was his best score ever.

He was sure he’d won the bet.

He called to ask for my score, but the line just rang with no answer.

Caleb smirked, convinced I was too embarrassed to pick up.

He decided to come to my house instead, to see me lose in person.

Just as he got to my door, he ran into Gary, the butler.

“Sir, where are you going?”

“To find Emma,” Caleb said casually.

Gary looked surprised. “Sir, didn’t you know? Miss Hartwell left the country weeks ago to get away from everything.”

“Get away from what?” Caleb frowned.

“While you were on vacation, some videos of her leaked online, it got really ugly. Her guardians sent her abroad to get some space.”

Caleb’s heart dropped at the word “videos,” he had no idea.

He frantically opened the school forum and local social media, which were flooded with the videos.

He clicked one. The background made his eyes widen in shock.

It was the place where he had been jumped years ago.

Emma, backed against a wall, her clothes being torn…

But back then, Vanessa had told him she was the one who saved him.

Caleb froze, his fingers trembling.
