They Chose My Twin, So I Chose a Life Without Them Chapter 01

The day I returned from Montana, my family also came back from Florida.

The moment my mother walked through the door, she glanced at the empty kitchen.

Then she started complaining.

“You knew Lily gets carsick and can’t eat while traveling. You couldn’t have made dinner before we got home?”

“You don’t act like an older sister at all!”

Her accusation left me speechless.

I was technically Lily’s older sister, but only by one hour.

Still, I had been expected to care for her, give in to her, and put her first in everything since childhood. If I fell short even once, I was labeled cruel.

Besides, I had been home for less than ten minutes. I hadn’t even had a glass of water.

It had been nearly impossible to get a ride from the airport, so I had asked in the family chat when they planned to return.

I had hoped they could pick me up on the way.

My message sat there unanswered for hours.

With no other choice, I joined the taxi line and stood under the blazing sun for two full hours before I found a ride.

Lily suddenly tapped our mother’s arm and silently mouthed for her to check her phone.

My mother blinked, opened the family chat, and finally saw my message.

A trace of guilt crossed her face, but she still turned on me with irritation.

“Next time, call if it’s important. Who has time to stare at all that garbage in a group chat every day?”

I knew she wasn’t too busy to check.

They had simply created a separate chat for their beloved younger daughter long ago.

A private little circle of affection where the inconvenient daughter didn’t exist.

If I was right, that chat had existed since eighth grade.

Back then, a car had struck me on my way home from school. A stranger had tagged my parents over and over in the family chat, but neither of them responded.

A state trooper eventually found their numbers through my school’s emergency contact records. Only then did they come to the hospital.

Lily, on the other hand, never had to post a single word. Our parents always knew exactly where she was and what she needed.

I used to refuse to believe they didn’t love me, so I never let myself suspect the truth.

Now I finally understood.

In that chat and in this house, I was the extra person no one wanted.

I lowered my head and answered quietly.

“I understand. It won’t happen again.”

I would never bother them again, and I would never expect love that had never been real.
