They Bet On How Fast I Would Cry On Our Anniversary Chapter 09

A few days later, Ethan arrived at the courthouse before me.

No flowers. No wedding ring. Just the paperwork.

He’d lost a lot of weight in the days we’d been apart.

When he saw me walk in, he stood.

“I watched all the original footage.”

I said nothing.

He went on. “Three years ago, you asked me if I really regretted marrying you.

“I was too focused on the camera to notice you were shaking the whole night.”

“Two years ago, you locked yourself in the bathroom and threw up for hours.”

“Last year, you sat in the guest room until morning.”

His voice grew rougher with every word.

“I used to think that if you kept coming back, it couldn’t have hurt that much.”

I finally looked at him.

“I came back because I loved you. Not because it didn’t hurt.”

“And forgiving you didn’t mean you got to hurt me again.”

Ethan’s eyes went red.

“Can we start over?”

“No friends. No cameras. No more games. Just us.”

The clerk called our number.

I picked up my documents.

“No.”

He followed me, still not giving up.

“What if I don’t cooperate?”

con divorco My lawver already has everything.”

Ethan went completely quiet. In the end, he signed.

When the clerk handed us the divorce certificate, Ethan stared at it for a long time.

On our wedding day, he’d held my hand and promised never to use divorce against me.

Four years later, he’d turned our divorce agreement into a game prop.

And in the end, he’d actually lost our marriage.

Just before I walked out, he called my name.

“Claire. Three years ago, Sophie asked me what I regretted most.”

“Now I know the answer.”

“It was using your pain over and over again to prove that you loved me.”

I didn’t turn around.

“But I don’t want to hear it anymore.”

He asked one more question.

“If you

could choose again, would you still marry me?”

This time, I didn’t cry like I had at last year’s fake wedding.

I just said, “No.”

Then I walked down the steps.

This time, he didn’t follow.
