The Wife He Never Married, the Wife He Always Came Home To Chapter 03

Chase had security throw me out. My stuff got tossed on the curb like garbage.

I was on my hands and knees picking it up.

Jordan ran over to help. Her voice was soft. “Harper, nobody dared say anything because everyone knows how much he spoils his wife. He’s so cold to everyone else, but on his private account, it’s all her and the kid.”

“Private account?”

I couldn’t stop myself from asking.

Jordan showed me her phone.

That’s when I understood. Chase had already made Brittany public. She was his wife, the real one, the one everyone saw.

The account tied to me? Dead water. His “work profile.”

I don’t remember how I got home. I was in a fog.

The staff at Oakhaven Estate was running around, moving my things out of the bedroom.

I stopped them. “What are you doing?”

They stammered. Eyes kept sliding sideways.

“I told them to move it.”

I turned around. Chase had his arm around Brittany, walking right in.

“Brittany’s hurt. Your room faces south, good light. It’s perfect for her.”

He wasn’t even looking at me. Just fixing her hair, touching the little cut on her forehead.

“You wanted them out of Sunset Heights, right? Done. Brittany and Ethan live here now.”

I stepped right in front of him and made him look at me.

“Chase, this is our home. You promised me a home.”

His eyes shifted. He didn’t say anything.

My heart ached like needles were stitching through it.

My dad Randy was a gambler. He drove my mom to suicide. Chase was the one who got me out of that house. That teenage boy, in the rain, chasing after me, making a promise, “Harper, you hate that place. Then I’ll give you a home.”

“Daddy, me and Mommy don’t have anywhere to go.”

Ethan’s voice yanked me back. He was crying, pulling Chase’s shirt.

Brittany started sniffling too.

Whatever warmth had been flickering in Chase’s eyes died. What was left was cold. “She’s just staying here. You really can’t stand it?”

“Don’t forget. I’m the one who moved your mother’s grave.”

My eyes went wide. I heard the threat.

“You’re blackmailing me with that?” My voice cracked.

Brittany saw the tension and tugged at Chase’s sleeve, faking sweet. “Chase, don’t fight with Harper over me. This is your home. I get it… she doesn’t want me here.”

“Home?” Chase laughed. “What home does she have?”

“She’s got nowhere to go.”

My brain went white noise.

I moved to Oakhaven with him, thousands of miles away from everything I knew. And now he tells me I’m homeless.

Chase took Brittany’s hand and walked past me. “Brittany, I had some new clothes ordered for you. All current season. Want to see?”

“An open department manager position came up. If you want it, it’s yours.”

Ethan trailed beside them. A perfect happy family.

I was the extra. The outsider.

My nails sliced into my palms again.

Right then, I really understood. The boy I loved was gone.

My fingers hovered over the confidential files of Vance Industries.

Then I clicked Send.
