Angelica dropped to her knees and wrapped herself around my mom’s legs.

“Mom, I swear I never thought she’d jump! I didn’t say those last words. Dad’s the one who told her to die. The

chip took it as a command. You can’t put all of this on me!”

My dad staggered back like he’d been hit.

“Mom, Dad, please.” Angelica was gasping between sobs. “If they investigate, Aldercrest will rescind my

acceptance. I’ll go to prison.”

“You’re already losing Rafa. Do you want to lose me too?”

The hallway went silent.

Minutes ago, my mom had been ready to tear Angelica apart.

But Angelica looked up with that tear–streaked face, and the fury in my mom’s eyes started cracking.

My dad slumped against the wall, gray–faced. “The hospital already found the chip. How are we supposed to

hide this?”

“We can,” Angelica said, words tumbling out fast. “We just say Rafa agreed to it. Tell them she signed up for some experimental neurology program overseas and we only found out today.”

“Please. I’m the only daughter you have left who still has a future.”

She was the only daughter they had left who still had a future.

My mom closed her eyes. Tears kept falling.

After a long silence, she nodded.

My dad said nothing.

Adrian stared at them. “You’re really going to cover for her?”

My mom pressed her hands over her face. “Rafa’s already gone. Even if we destroy Angelica, it won’t bring

her back.”

I’d heard that logic my entire life.

Every time Angelica took something from me, my parents handed me the same line.

It was already done. Getting it back wouldn’t undo the damage.

So I should just swallow it. One more time.

Now they were using the same excuse to give away my life.

My dad approached the doctor, fighting to keep his voice level.

“We just remembered something. Rafa mentioned some kind of overseas neurology trial while she was gone. She probably agreed to have the chip put in. We’ll sign whatever statement you need. This is a family matter, and we’d appreciate it if the hospital didn’t involve the police.”

The doctor’s eyes moved from face to face, settling last on Angelica, still crumpled on the floor.

“I understand.”

He tucked his tablet under his arm and walked away.

Angelica thought it was over. She sagged onto the floor and let out a long, shaking breath.

Less than ten minutes later, the elevator doors opened. Two police detectives stepped out, the hospital’s

security director right behind them.

“Are you the family of Raphaela Bennett?”

Angelica went white.

My dad stepped in front of them. “This was a medical accident. We didn’t file any report.”

The lead detective held up his badge.

“The hospital filed a mandatory report after finding a suspected illegal implant. Family consent isn’t required for a criminal investigation. On top of that, multiple witnesses recorded phone footage at the party before the patient’s fall. Someone’s already forwarded it to the department.”

The truth had already walked out of that house on dozens of phones.

The detective’s eyes landed on the silver controller.

“No one touches that again.”

“As of right now, it’s evidence.”
