The Unwanted Luna’s Farewell Chapter 06

The Unwanted Luna’s Farewell Chapter 06

Mom stared incredulously at my retreating back.

“A Roomette? She can actually afford a Roomette?”

A private roomette on the California Zephyr cost far more than standard Coach.

Let alone the fact that the four of them, aiming to save money, were sitting in the cheapest basic seats from

their tour package.

Dad pondered for a moment, his brow furrowing.

“Could she have borrowed money?”

Olivia quickly validated his guess.

“In college, when she threw a fit wanting a voice recorder and Mom said no, she turned right around to Aunt

Rebecca. She definitely borrowed from her again.”

Owen said disdainfully: “Doing this–how is Charlotte leaving Mom any dignity?”

The more Mom listened, the angrier she grew–her usually sensible, obedient eldest daughter pulled such an

out–of–line stunt!

Thinking of the relatives gossiping behind her back, thinking of my cold indifference these past two days, and realizing a single Roomette ticket cost more than all four of their Coach tickets combined–Mom couldn’t sit still any longer.

She stepped out and marched toward the sleeping car.

“No way! I’m going to demand what on earth she thinks she’s doing!”

She hurried through two carriages.

The moment she reached the sleeping car entrance, staff politely stopped her.

“Ma’am, please present your ticket.”

Mom’s face flushed crimson, yet her tone lost none of its force: “My daughter is in this car! Why can’t I go

in?”

“That girl who just went in, Charlotte Hayes–I’m her mother!”

“So sorry, ma’am. The sleeping car is strictly open to passengers holding valid reservations. We ask for your understanding.”

Mom’s face turned beet red in an instant.

Having lived in the Silverfang Pack for so many years, what she cared about most was how others viewed her family.

She spun around, whipped out her phone, and furiously typed out a string of messages.

[Charlotte, you actually borrowed money to book such an expensive Roomette?]

[Don’t think I don’t know–you’re still holding a grudge over the gifts, using this petty trick to get back at us,

aren’t you?]

[Get back to the Coach car right now and turn over the money you borrowed!]

Send.

The next second.

Message not delivered.

Now Mom was completely driven over the edge.

The next moment, she opened the Hayes family channel directly.

Since I refused to reply to her.

Then she’d let the entire pack family know what I had done.

[Our unfilial daughter Charlotte Hayes–just to spite us, she took leave during her internship to run off on a trip.]

[God knows who she borrowed money from, but she actually booked a Roomette on the California Zephyr.]

[When she can’t pay it back next month, don’t hold back asking her for it out of respect for me. She’s an adult

now and should learn to be responsible.]

The quiet family channel blew up in an instant.

Some relatives put on elder airs, jumping in to scold me for being childish and foolish.

Others seized the chance to show off how well–behaved their own kids were.

Suddenly, my young cousin Mia Hayes popped up.

[Wait, that’s not right. I heard Charlotte already passed Northstar’s final assessment and got brought on full–time.]

[At a company like Northstar, why would she need to borrow money to ride a train?]

Mom’s thumb froze above the screen.

She asked Mia with trembling fingers: [Mia, where did you hear that?]

Mia tossed back a screenshot.

It was an Instagram post I made two days ago.

One Mom had never bothered to look at.

The photo showed only a cup of coffee, the corner of a contract, and a Northstar employee badge.

The caption was simple.

First long–term assignment after going full–time.

Omaha, Nebraska.

New city. New chapter.

An attached image showed a redacted contract.

Written clearly on it was the assignment duration: five years.

In an instant, Mom felt the entire world spinning around her.
