The Twin They Saved, The Twin They Destroyed Chapter 04

The Twin They Saved, The Twin They Destroyed Chapter 04

Hearing my name, Mom and the others exchanged baffled looks.

“You’ve got the wrong girl. Our Blake is the one who aced it.”

Cole jumped in. “Yeah, you guys have got this all wrong. Avery didn’t even show up for the SAT. Why would you want her?”

“Check the scores! Let’s pull up the scores right now and everyone can see our Blake is the real top scorer.”

Blake paused, tilting her head with this little pout. “Wait, is that mean to Avery, though? She didn’t even finish it. Once my score pops up…” She winced in fake sympathy. “God, that’s gonna be awkward for her.”

Mom didn’t hesitate. “Avery’s tough. She can handle it.”

“Let’s pull up the scores live and show everyone how brilliant our Blake is.”

My heart had gone numb a long time ago. I was just a prop to them. The before to Blake’s after. I’d lost count of how many times they’d used me like that.

Ever since their little mission began—messing with my alarm, dumping me on the side of the road—every stunt, every scheme, all designed to tank my scores.

Every time, they’d laugh it off like a joke to comfort Blake.

“See? Your sister didn’t beat you this time!”

“See, Blake? You’re the smart one. The second you calm down, your scores leave Avery’s in the dust.”

They never cared if their words or actions hurt me.

Just like now, standing there while they got ready to tear me apart in front of a room full of people.

Cole didn’t even flinch. He waved a waiter over. “Bring me a laptop.”

“Let’s start with Avery’s scores.”

He typed in my SAT registration number. The screen refreshed and showed: Score Canceled.

A beat of silence. Then the crowd erupted.

“Wait—canceled? Did she cheat?”

“Did she just not show up?”

“Didn’t their older daughter used to be smart? What happened to her?”

Someone muttered, “Probably got caught cheating and had to cancel.”

“I heard someone saw her working at a club. Maybe she’s…”

Mom and the others didn’t say a single word to defend me.

“See? What’d I tell you? Wrong girl. Her scores got canceled. Who recruits someone who didn’t even finish the test?”

“You need to look at our Blake. She’s the one you want.”

They practically shoved Blake at the admissions reps. Tate stepped forward, smug. “Go on, check Blake’s score. Blow everyone’s minds.”

Cole grinned and entered Blake’s registration number. Everyone held their breath. The portal refreshed.
