The Twin Face That Haunts Me Chapter 13

I didn’t own a single formal evening gown. Mom rummaged through every closet and drawer, pulling out one of her old dresses to hold up against me, only to find it fit terribly.

She hesitated, speaking reluctantly. “Maybe you can just wear your regular clothes then–there’s no strict dress code, anyway…”

“Mom.” Selena cut her off from the doorway, clutching a pale lavender gown in her hands. “Let

Flora borrow mine.”

Mom shot the idea down without a moment’s thought. “That’s far too expensive a dress-what if she rips or stains it?”

“Mom, don’t be ridiculous. We’re sisters, there’s no need to be so petty about material things.”

Selena walked over and pressed the gown into my arms. “I’ve only worn this once, Flora. It’s

practically brand new-try it on.”

I stood frozen, but Selena pulled me into her room to help me change, then did my makeup with her

own hands.

When she finished, she stood behind me, grinning proudly at our reflection in the vanity mirror. “Look how gorgeous you clean up, Flora. You’re every bit as lovely as your sister.”

I lifted my gaze to the unfamiliar girl staring back at me from the glass. With makeup layered on, my face looked nearly identical to Selena’s-yet our auras couldn’t be more different.

She radiated bright, unapologetic confidence, while I looked muted, small, and perpetually timid.
