The Twin Face That Haunts Me Chapter 07

The rain had lightened to a drizzle by then. I held the umbrella over both of us while we waited for

his driver to arrive.

Before he left, he twisted to face me. “Can I treat you to dinner tomorrow?”

“I don’t think that’s necessary.”

“Alright, how about the day after tomorrow?”

“Really, it’s fine.”

“Okay, then the day after that?”

I got the feeling he’d keep asking until next month if I kept turning him down. I sighed in

resignation.

“Fine, that works.”

“It’s a date, I’ll pick you up then!”

He hesitated a few seconds, then stepped closer, bending down to meet my gaze, bright eyes

sparkling.

“You look just like Selena, but you’re nothing like her at all. I’m genuinely, really happy I got to

meet you today.”

I hadn’t processed his words before he straightened up, grinning and waving goodbye.

“See you later!”

I snapped out of my daze. “Bye…”

I’d barely stepped back inside the Carter house when I heard Selena arguing with Mom and Dad

about her honeymoon fund in the living room.

“Mom, Dad, this much money is more than enough for me. You don’t need to keep adding more.”

Selena’s gentle voice carried through the hallway.

“Nonsense,” Mom shot back, tone unyielding. “The Yorks hold massive wealth and influence-you can’t show up with a small fund, it’ll look embarrassing.”

Selena fell quiet for a moment, then sighed softly. “If you pour all the family assets into my fund, what will Flora have for her future?”

The instant those words left her mouth, Mom and Dad both went silent. A beat passed before Mom’s

voice drifted out, dull and dismissive.

“Flora’s future can wait. Besides, she’s not the type a wealthy family like the Yorks would ever

consider marrying.”

“Mom!” Selena caught sight of me standing on the staircase and cut her off sharply.

Mom and Dad’s heads snapped toward me as well. The whole room fell dead silent.

I curled my fingers inward, their unified stares heavy on my skin, then trudged silently up the

stairs to my room.

Minutes later, Mom appeared at my doorway carrying a fruit platter, forcing a warm smile.

“Flora, tell the cook whatever you’d like for dinner tonight, I’ll have them make it right away.”

I shook my head, ready to say it wasn’t necessary, when my nose suddenly tickled, and I sneezed

hard without warning.

Since coming back home, I’d suffered constant dry throats and exhaustion, probably just

homesickness and a mild cold from the change in weather.

“What’s wrong, honey?” Mom stepped closer, her brows knitting with faint worry.

I’d only ever seen that exact concerned look on her face when Selena fell ill. A faint, fragile warmth

stirred in my chest.
