The Twin Face That Haunts Me Chapter 04

I fled back to my cramped quarters without another word, collapsing onto the thin mattress.

The room sweltered, and I couldn’t tell if the heat or my heartache had pulled me under into a hazy half-sleep.

I dreamed of Thomas.

It was the night before his father came to take him back to the city, after his mother passed away. Guards had been posted to watch him around the clock, yet he’d snuck out to find me anyway.

I barely recognized him—scrapes and fresh cuts crisscrossed his arms and legs, his shirt torn open, a raw gash split open across his forehead. He stood beneath Grandpa’s courtyard wall, a broken, miserable mess.

I panicked and reached for him, but he clamped his fingers tight around my wrist, his grip bruising, like he feared I’d vanish if he let go.

“Wait for me. Promise you’ll wait until I come back for you. Trust me, I always will.”

My throat locked up, too choked to speak, so I nodded over and over.

The dream shifted. The scrawny, impoverished boy faded away, replaced by a polished, aloof tycoon standing poised in front of cameras, heir to the entire York fortune, self-assured and impossibly refined.

He’d become a whole new person, while I remained trapped in the past—timid, insignificant, with nothing to my name.
