The Top Score That Brought The Army Chapter 04

Everyone stared at the final rankings in shock.

My name remained at the very top, absolute and undisputed.

Yana’s name, on the other hand, had plunged straight down to two hundredth place—even lower than her previous eighty-fourth.

The moment Yana saw the score, her face drained of color.

Heavy tears spilled down her cheeks as she covered her face and ran off.

Magnus stared at his phone, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fists.

“How is this possible? I clung to you every day! You didn’t have a single second to study…”

I tilted my head and looked at him, a flicker of pity in my eyes.

All that month, when he dragged me off to skip class and play games at the internet café, I had worn headphones to stream online lectures.

He dragged me into late-night gaming sessions, while I worked through math functions on scrap paper with one hand on the controller, perfecting the art of multitasking.

Even when he sat next to me whispering sweet nonsense, my earbuds were playing French listening comprehension.

I reached out, patted his handsome face, and let out a somewhat reluctant sigh.

“I had a great time this month, sweetie.”

Magnus froze for a moment.

His face flushed red straight down to his neck.

In a fit of helpless rage, he kicked over a trash can nearby.

“Angie!”

I ignored him and turned to leave.

Behind me, the other three broke into ruthless laughter at Magnus’s expense.

Then Asher drawled, “Your little schemes are trivial. If you want to fix a problem, you finish it for good.”

He raised his hand and slowly drew his index finger across his throat.

The other three exchanged looks, the laughter fading from their eyes into cold intent.

Amon nodded. “If Asher is stepping in… she’s completely done for.”

The day I picked up my scholarship, I walked out of the classroom and called my dad.

“Hey Dad, school’s out for break.”

Dad’s voice boomed over the speaker, filled with joy.

“Great! My baby girl took first place again! I’ve already got a feast all planned for you!”

“It actually aligns with your grandfather’s eightieth birthday. Tons of relatives came out just to celebrate. Everyone needs to know my daughter is a genius, hahahaha!”

Just as I was about to reply, a sharp pain struck the back of my head.

My vision went dark, and my phone slipped from my hand, shattering against the pavement.

My body went limp, collapsing to the ground.

In the last second of fading consciousness, I caught sight of Asher’s indifferent face.

He looked down at me, turning to the men behind him. “Take her away. Dispose of her.”

On the ground, my phone speaker blared with Dad’s voice.

“Hello? Sweetheart, why aren’t you saying anything? Hello?”

Asher bent over and picked up the phone. He originally intended to hang up, but paused as an idea struck him.

He brought the phone to his mouth, a cruel smile curving on his lips.

“Are you Angie’s dad? Your daughter picked the wrong folks to provoke. Let’s hope she’s smarter about who she offends in her next life.”

Silence fell on the other end for a few seconds.

Dad’s voice dropped, instantly sounding like a completely different person.

“Who are you? What did you do to my daughter?”

Asher felt a wave of satisfaction, leaning lazily against the car door.

“What could the likes of you even do, even if you knew?”

“Whatever, I’ll spare you the mystery. Your girl’s in the Blackwoods’ hands.”

He ended the call, tossed the phone to the ground, and got into the car.

“Drive.”

The engine roared, and the car pulled out of the school gates.

Barely three minutes had passed when it screeched to an abrupt halt.

Asher, who had been resting his eyes in the back seat, lurched forward from the sudden stop.

He looked up in annoyance. “What’s wrong?”

The henchman in the front seat spoke with a trembling voice. “Mr. Blackwood… we can’t go further.”

Asher looked out the window, his pupils shrinking.

Over a hundred helicopters hovered overhead, blotting out the sky. Every escape route was completely blocked.

Ropes dropped, and rows of operatives in black tactical gear slid down, raising weapons with cold expressions.

“Nobody move. Stay where you are.”
