The System Admitted Its Mistake—So I Offered Him a Divorce Chapter 08

What was he even talking about?

He was out of his mind.

I rolled my eyes in irritation.

“Julian, do you actually need something? If not, I’m hanging up.”

“I do.”

He answered quickly.

Then his breathing caught awkwardly.

“I need something.”

I summoned my patience again. “What is it? Could you please get to the point?”

“I… I forgot to pack a cuff link.”

I had even less to say to that.

“Mr. Hayes, is your family going bankrupt? If you lost a cuff link, can’t you just buy another

one?”

Julian acted as if he was being perfectly reasonable.

“My grandmother had it custom-made for me. It’s sentimental. I can’t buy another one.”

Resigned, I rolled over.

“Then tell me where you left it. I’ll find it and have someone bring it over.”

Julian went quiet again.

I glanced at the call still open on my screen. “Hello? Julian? Are you still there?”

He swallowed.

His voice suddenly sounded strained.

“I’m here. Lily, are you sleeping on the left side of the bed?”

“Yes. Why?”

I always slept on the left.

And I barely moved in my sleep.

Julian let out a soft breath. “The cuff link is under the pillow on the right.”

After he said that, his end of the call went eerily quiet.

He pressed his ear tight against his phone.

He held his breath and listened.

He listened for the slightest unusual sound on my end.

On my end, I heard his answer.

I couldn’t help frowning.

He left a cuff link under his pillow?

Was he trying to be the princess in The Princess and the Pea?

I lifted the pillow.

Sure enough, a cuff link lay underneath.

“Julian, I found it. I’ll send it over with a local courier in a bit.”

Maybe I was imagining things.

Julian suddenly sounded much brighter.

His voice was still cold, but considerably more relaxed.

“Okay. Thanks.”

I barely stopped myself from calling him a lunatic. “Anything else? If not, I’m hanging up.”

“Lily.”

Julian swallowed..

“I know the stuff online isn’t true. Do you need me to deal with it…”

“No.”

I cut him off coldly.

“It’s not all false, is it?”

“Julian, we really are getting divorced.”

“As for Luke, it’s perfectly normal to meet other people after a divorce. Leave the rumors alone. Responding will only make them worse.”

Julian gave a quiet “Mm,” then asked, “Does he… look a lot like me?”

That was funny.

“Julian, what are you talking about? You actually believe the nonsense people make up

online?”

“I’ve known Luke since I was four. I didn’t even know who you were back then.”

“Okay, enough. I need to feed the cats. Bye.”

I ended the call.

Then I rolled out of bed.

It was happening at the same time.

Julian was on the other side of the city.

His face went ashen.

He stayed motionless, still gripping his phone.

His fingertips turned white.

“Lily, so he doesn’t look like me. I look like him…”

“Fine. Great. Whatever you want, Lily. Who cares…”
