The Surgeon’s Wife Chapter 05

The Surgeon’s Wife Chapter 05

By 8 AM, the bombs started detonating.

Not literal ones-though the impact was just as devastating.

The first to land was the evidence package delivered simultaneously to every member of Whitfield Medical’s Board of Directors. Twelve envelopes. Hand-delivered by Raymond Park’s legal couriers at exactly 7 45 AM fifteen minutes before Ethan’s power-of-attorney hearing was scheduled to begin.

Inside each envelope: the falsified pathology report, the forged will, the altered surgical logs, and a USB drive

containing Lena’s audio recording.

By 7:52 AM, my phone was ringing nonstop.

Board Chairman Gerald Hoffman called first. His voice was shaking.

“Cora, is this real? Tell me this isn’t real.”

“Every word. Every document. Verified by independent forensic analysts.”

“Jesus Christ. He’s been operating on patients in our hospitals. If this gets out-”

“It’s already out, Gerald. The FBI received the same package thirty minutes ago. And the New York Times health desk has an exclusive running at nine.”

Silence. Then: “What do you need from me?”

“An emergency board vote. Effective immediately. Strip Ethan Ashford of his position as Chief of Surgery Revoke his hospital privileges across all Whitfield facilities. And terminate his employment with cause

“Done. I’ll have the votes within the hour.”

The second bomb hit the courthouse.

Raymond had filed an emergency motion to dismiss the power of attorney petition, accompanied by the full evidence package. Judge Morrison-the same judge who’d fast-tracked Ethan’s request-took one look at the forged documents and the audio recording, and her face turned the color of ash.

The petition was denied before Ethan even arrived at the courthouse.

And the third bomb-the one I’d designed specifically for maximum devastation-hit the morning news cycle

at exactly 9:00 AM.

I watched it from my hospital bed, where I had returned before dawn, still officially “critical.”

The New York Times headline: “Whitfield Medical Chief of Surgery Accused of Attempted Murder of His n

Wife During Operation.”

CNN picked it up within minutes. Then MSNBC. Then every local affiliate on the Eastern Seaboard.

Ethan’s face-that handsome, trustworthy, camera-ready face-was plastered across every screen in America

Lena sat beside me, watching the coverage with grim satisfaction.

“His phone has been ringing nonstop,” she said. “The nurses’ station said he’s locked himself in his office Security had to turn away three news crews at the main entrance.”

“And Mia?”

“Tried to board a flight to the Caymans at 7 AM. TSA flagged her passport-Raymond had the FBI put a travel

hold on her last night.”

I nodded. “Good.”

At 10:15 AM, the door to my hospital suite burst open.

Ethan stood in the doorway.

He was still wearing his white coat, but it was wrinkled, the collar askew. His hair was disheveled-something I’d never seen before. Ethan was always immaculate. Always controlled.

Not anymore.

His eyes were wild, bloodshot, darting between me and Lena with the frantic energy of a cornered animal

“You’re awake,” he said. His voice cracked. “You’re… how are you awake? The bleed should have-

He stopped himself. But it was too late.

Lena hit record on her phone.

“The bleed should have what, Ethan?” I asked calmly from my bed. “Killed me?”

“That’s not what 1-1 was concerned about your surgical recovery-”

“You nicked my hepatic artery. Deliberately. During a procedure to remove a benign tumor that you told everyone was stage-three cancer.”

“That’s insane. You were under anesthesia. You don’t know what you heard-”

“I know exactly what I heard. And so does the FBI, the medical board, and about fourteen million people watching the news right now.”

The color drained from his face.

“Cora, listen to me.” He stepped closer, his hands raised, palms out-the universal gesture of a man trying to talk his way out of a death sentence. “This is a misunderstanding. Someone is feeding you false information. Probably that incompetent anesthesiologist-”

“Dr. Chen saved my life. She’s the reason I’m still breathing.”

“She’s manipulating you! She’s always had it out for me. This is her revenge-”

“Ethan.” I sat up in bed, ignoring the fire in my abdomen. “Stop.”

Something in my voice made him freeze.

“I know about Mia. I know you’ve been sleeping with her since before our wedding. I know you planned this together. I know about the Boston widow. I know about the buried malpractice cases. I know about the forged will and the bribed pathologist and every single lie you’ve told for the past three years.”

I reached under my pillow and pulled out my father’s letter.

“And I know my father warned me about you before he died. I just didn’t read the letter in time.”

Ethan stared at the letter. Recognition flashed in his eyes-and then something worse.

Fear.

“The trust is locked,” I continued. “Every asset is frozen. Your power of attorney was denied. The board voted unanimously to terminate you twenty minutes ago. And the FBI is on their way here right now.”

“You have nothing, Ethan. No money. No title. No hospital. No wife.”

He lunged.

Not at me at the letter. As if destroying it could somehow undo everything.

But Lena was faster. She stepped between us, and two security guards-ones I had personally called-seized Ethan by the arms and slammed him against the wall.

“Get off me! I am the Chief of Surgery! I built this department!”

“You built nothing,” I said. “You married into everything. And now you’re divorced from it.”

I nodded to the guards. “Hold him here. The FBI will want to talk to him.”

As they pinned him, Ethan twisted to look at me one last time. The mask was completely gone now. No charm. No composure. Just raw, ugly desperation.

“Cora, please. I loved you. In my own way, I did love you-”

“Your ‘love’ left me bleeding out on an operating table.”

I pressed the call button beside my bed.

“Get him out of my room.”
