“If you kill him, I’ll die with him.”

I stood in front of Ethan.

My voice wasn’t loud, but every word was clear.

Liam froze.

He held the knife, two steps away, his eyes bloodshot.

“What did you just say?” The words were a barely audible whisper, heavy with disbelief.

“I said,” I stared at him, “I’m his legal wife now. If you kill him, I die with him.”

Silence.

The warehouse’s fluorescent lights hummed.

Liam started to laugh. It began as a low chuckle, then grew louder, sharper, spiraling into something jagged and unhinged-the sound of a wire snapping under extreme tension.

“Fine,” he said, his smile fading as his eyes turned icy, “I’ll grant you both that.”

He raised the knife.

Just then, screeching brakes echoed outside the warehouse.

Not one-dozens.

Car doors slammed open, and heavy footsteps surged in from all directions.

“Freeze, everyone!”

Men in black suits burst in, moving crisply like a well-oiled machine, Liam’s men didn’t even have time to react before they were tackled to the ground.

The leader strode in, his gaze sweeping the room before settling on Ethan.

His expression shifted.

He hurried over, knelt down, and lifted Ethan off the floor, his voice low but audible-

“Mr. Carter.”

Ethan’s eyes fluttered open, his lips moving, but I couldn’t make out what he said.

Before Liam could react, the knife was knocked from his hand. The leader kicked him to the ground, pressed a knee to his chest, and pulled a gun from his waist, pressing it to Liam’s temple.

“Move a muscle, and it’s the last thing you’ll ever do.”

Liam’s face pressed against the cold concrete, but his eyes locked onto mine.

“Mia Moore,” he said, his voice hoarse, “you win.”

I didn’t look at him.

I knelt, taking Ethan’s hand. His fingers were cold, but he squeezed mine gently.

“Don’t be afraid,” he said.

I cried too hard to speak.
