The Soldier I Married Is the Don’s Heir Chapter 02

The comments exploded.

[So lucky! Estate just walked into some bar and found the Don’s long-lost son.]

[She’s going to be miserable soon. We’re all waiting.]

[LMAO. The heir himself is eating box lunches at a construction site. Does Estate think she’s still in some rich-family romance?]

After reading the comments, I learned his name was Rocco Vadala.

He was Don Michele Vadala’s illegitimate son, but he didn’t know it.

He thought he was an orphan. He’d been fierce since childhood, and he dropped out of high school to carryl building materials at construction sites in Brooklyn.

Rocco rolled his eyes and smirked.

“You’re the daughter of the Conti family. Are you messing with me? You’re telling me you can’t afford a meal?”

I told him everything Luca had done.

Rocco’s brows snapped together. He cursed, “Wait here. I’ll find you a job.”

Rocco found me a job at a restaurant near the construction site. The owner let me stay in the staff room upstairs and gave me two meals per shift.

The owner treated me well. I’d been working there ever since.

I no longer had to survive all day on one plate of vegetables. After the late shift, sometimes I even got the hot chocolate the owner treated everyone to, and my cheeks slowly turned rosy again.

I treasured the life I had now.

Until Luca found the restaurant.

Because he kept hounding me, I finally stood up to him.

“Luca, stop coming after me.” I wiped the olive oil off my hands, my tone firm.

Luca only got angry. He pointed at my washed-out dress.

“Estate, you let yourself end up like this for a bite to eat?”

Aurora’s tears fell immediately.

“It’s all my fault. If I’d known my little sister cared that much about food, I would’ve given her all those meal vouchers.”

Luca immediately pulled Aurora behind him.

“This isn’t your fault. She can’t control her mouth. Sooner or later, she’ll ruin herself. Pathetic.”

The two of them stood side by side, ready to leave.

Watching them walk away, I suddenly realized that ever since I was little, I’d been used to seeing them together while I was always the child left behind.

I sighed and said to them, “Yes. I think one meal matters.”

Luca stopped in disbelief.

He turned around, trying to find a trace of spite or joking on my face.

But there was none.

I told him, “You think missing one meal is nothing. But to me, that moment felt like the sky caving in.”

“I wanted to carry myself with the same grace and lightness you do. I couldn’t.”

“Nothing I did ever earned me approval. Only when I was full did I feel like the hole inside me was temporarily filled. I knew it wasn’t love, but it was the only way I had to comfort myself.”

“You gave me no affection, and you wouldn’t even let me get enough to eat. That was unreasonable.”

“If my body shames you, then stop coming after me.”

I’d always been meek. I’d never talked back to anyone like that, let alone Luca.

He froze for a long time, then finally took a step toward me.

“No, Estate. That’s not what we meant… We’re doing this for your own good.” He paused. “Those meal vouchers were just bad luck. Come home with me, and I promise I’ll treat you and Aurora equally from now on. Okay?”

Aurora hurriedly wiped her tears too.

“Yes, Esta. Grandma made your favorite chicken noodle soup at home. Come back with us. Mother and father miss you.”

It was the middle of summer in New York. When I was little, whenever the weather got that hot and sticky, Grandma would make me a pot of chicken noodle soup.

I told myself I was just going back to see her.

But the moment I walked into the apartment building, the comments popped up again, gloating.

[Aurora only needed a bowl of soup that didn’t even exist to trick this pig back home.]

[She really thought her family would save dinner for her? A trial was waiting for her. The Conti family was already generous enough to let a daughter like that stay.]
